How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups To Your Audience?

The document compares the protagonists Lilly from the author's opening sequence "Stalked" and Kimberley from the film "Taken". Both characters are young girls presented as vulnerable and innocent through clothing, hairstyle, and reactions captured with close-ups. While Kimberley is a teenager, Lilly is portrayed as younger to add to the suspense of being kidnapped. Their costumes reveal differences in age and personality. The author chose to introduce Lilly halfway through to create intrigue, while Kimberley is shown from the beginning to be the focus. Both characters effectively portray protagonists to audiences in a way that elicits tension and concern for their safety.

How does your media product represent

particular social groups to your audience?
I will be comparing the main protagonist Lilly played by Olivia Conneely from my
opening sequence Stalked to the protagonist Kimberley Mills from Taken. I will be
identifying and explaining the similarities and differences between both characters. I
looked at Kimberley from Taken to get some ideas on how we can present our
protagonist who is going to be kidnapped. We looked at Taken as we were instantly
drawn into the suspense and tension from the opening sequence which we wanted to
include. I also liked the way Kimberley was presented throughout the film which is how
we wanted the audience to see our protagonist as well as the audience sympthasing for
her and scared for her.

Appearance- Both Kimberley and Olivia the protagonist can be related to the
audience as they are young vulnerable girls by the use of their reactions and
expressions through the use of extreme/close ups. Also their clothing shows
the audience that they are in with the fashion as its modern this can represent
how realistic both films are and they make the audience aware that being
kidnapped can happen in everyday life. Both characters have long brown hair
which can connote that they are both very girly and can be deemed as a
victim.

Role in film- Between both characters they are protagonists in films as well as
being young girls who are seemed as not being troublemakers this adds to the
innocence of both throughout the sequence. The costumes for each show
their personality as being bright and bold, the way they are introduced into the
productions clearly state that they are main protagonists and are at risk of
being in danger. Its clear to the audience that the protagonist is not an
antagonist in the films as their clothing dont match the image of an
antagonist which is dark coloured clothing.

Age- In Taken Kimberley is presented as a teenager which is portrayed through her height and
facial features however in our opening sequence our protagonist face is visible this then shows
through her facial features that she is younger compared to Kimberley. I choose these two
characters to compare as they are 2 different ages of girls who both experience being kidnapped.
However we choose to use a young girl as it helps add to the suspense of our opening sequence as
well as we can exploit her vulnerability more compared to an older girl.

Costume- Kimberleys clothing in Taken differs from Olivias as her costume shows off a younger
girls perspective compared to Kimberley who shows off a older teenager perspective. The
audience get to see the costume of Lilly through the use of long shots, close up shots and wide
angle shots. Compared to Kimberley in Taken the shots only used to show her costume were
long shots.

Role in film- In Pursue our protagonist is introduced halfway through the first scene where she is
asleep this differs from Taken as Kimberley is shown at the beginning of the scene this is to show
that the main focus is around her. We decided not to do this as we wanted to give our audience an
enigma as we didnt want to show straight away who was in danger as there was 2 protagonists. We
decided by showing the protagonist during the 1st scene it could cause the audience to become
aware that there was another protagonist and that now the audience become aware and worried
about the young girl this was to get the audience enticed into the production.

Overall, both Kimberley and Lilly from our group shows that our
opening sequence are very similar as they give tension and suspense to
the audience leaving the audience enticed. However, in terms of
appearance, other than them being girls and wearing bright and bold
colours they are different ages this then shows the audiences the
experience of being kidnapped from 2 different perspectives. To
conclude, both characters are successfully shown as protagonists
although they both have unique features which help them stand out.
