Expirement No 2

The document describes an experiment to prepare acridone from phthalic anhydride. Phthalamide is first prepared by fusing phthalic anhydride with urea at 130-135°C for 15 minutes. This yields phthalamide according to the given chemical reaction. The procedure involves mixing phthalic anhydride and urea, heating the mixture, cooling and filtering to obtain phthalamide. Analysis shows the theoretical yield is 9.93g, observed yield is 7.6g, and percentage yield is 76.53%. Phthalamide has applications in dye and drug synthesis.

AIM:- Preparation of Acridone from Phthalic Anhydride.

STEP 1:- Preparation of Phthalamide from Phthalic Anhydride
Requirement:- Phthalic Anhydride = 10gm
Urea = 2gm
Theory :- Phthalamide can be obtained by the action of conc. ammonia solution or urea on phthalic
anhydride . But owing to less time required and easiness the latter is preferred in which phthalic anhydride is
fused with urea according to the following chemical reaction.

Procedure:-
1) Mix intimately 10gm of phthalic anhydride and 2gm of urea and place this mixture in a flask.
2 )Heat the flask to 130-1350C on a sand bath upto 15min when the mixture froaths up
and become solid.

3) Cool the contents at room temperature and then nearly 10ml of water.
4) Stirr the contents well, filter the product, wash with a little amount of water.
5) Dry and recrystallise from Alcohol.

Application:-
1) Phthalimide is used as a precursor to anthranilic acid, a precursor to azo dyes.
2) Alkyl phthalimides are useful precursors to amines in chemical synthesis, especially in peptide synthesis
where they are used "to block both hydrogens and avoid racemization of the substrates.

3) Examples of Phthalimide drugs include Thalidomide, Amphotalide, Taltrimide & Talmetoprim.

Precaution:-
1)Carefully shake the bottle containing chemicals.
2) Carefully handle the glass apparatus.
3) Wear lab coat and gloves.

Observation:-

Name of Compound Phthalic Anhydride Urea

Mol. Formula C6H4(CO)2O CH4N2O
Mol. Mass 148.1 g/mol 60.06 g/mol
Melting Point 1310C 133-1350C
Amount taken 10gm 2gm
Density 1.53 g/cm3 1.32 g/cm3
Calculation:-
148.1 g of Phthalic Anhydride gives = 147.13g of Phthalamide
1g of Phthalic Anhydride gives = 147.13/148.1 of Phthalamide
10g of Phthalic Anhydride gives = (147.13/ 148.1)*10 of Phthalamide
= 9.93g
Observed yield = 7.6g
%age yield = 76.53%
