This document discusses the unsustainability of the current fashion industry and provides examples of how design can enable more sustainable practices. It notes that over 150 billion clothes are produced annually while 2.5 billion pounds end up as waste. The textile industry is also a major contributor to CO2 emissions and deforestation. The document then outlines various principles of sustainable design like using renewable materials and energy, designing for durability and recyclability, and minimizing environmental impacts. It provides examples of companies implementing these principles and tools to measure sustainability. The conclusion emphasizes that all stakeholders must work towards a more sustainable fashion system.

WHY SUSTAINABLITY?
150 billion clothes produced per year

2.5 billion pounds of dead stock clothes in land field

2.1 million tons of CO2 emission from textile

industry

70 100million tress are cut to make cellulose fabrics

each year

700 gallons of water require to produce 1 T-shirt

Sustainability
93 percent of companies dont know the origins of their raw
fibre
61 percent of companies dont know where their garment
were produced

These numbers are threatening

The challenge to the fashion industry then is in
understanding these threats
and
Take appropriate action to safeguard its future
Sustainable fashion
Sustainable fashion needs a balance between financial,
social and environmental sustainability
How things could remain productive indefinitely
without affecting the these 3 sectors
Sustainable fashion, also called eco fashion -to
create a system which can be supported
indefinitely in terms of environment and social
responsibility
Importance of design in Sustainable
Fashion
Design decides
which resources are used,
how materials are procured,
which technology & manufacturing processes are
utilised,
how the end product is shipped to reach its
destination,
how it will be acquired by the consumer and
eventually
how it will be consumed and disposed
or impact end-of-life management of the product
Sustainable design
A sustainable design will seek to incorporate environmental principles:
Lower energy and water consumption through the entire lifecycle from
manufacture, to daily use and disposal;
Minimize impact on climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
or mitigating them through carbon neutralizing activities;
Limit resource consumption through waste-free manufacturing, a
preference for renewable resources, and an emphasis on recycled
materials;
Reduce or eliminate waste by minimizing consumption, reusing when
possible, and recycling when necessary;
Minimize impact on the local ecosystem and look for ways to incorporate
bio mimicry principles where possible;
Give preference to non-toxic materials and those that will contribute to
the health and wellbeing of humanity;
Principles of Sustainable
Design
Form
The form represents the visual shape of the product
and is usually perceived to be the main element of the
design.
Before designing a products layout, however, the
designer should ask questions like how will the shape
affect energy consumption; and how will the size affect
the packaging, transportation costs, and fuel emissions?
IKEAs flat packing strategy, for example, helped it
reduce transport costs, fuel usage, and emissions
Function and Usability
The function and usability of the product contributes to its
sustainability in an indirect way, as it helps consumers use
the product more easily in less time and with less energy
consumption. People do not want to keep hard-to-use
products, so usable products can ensure less waste and
throwaways.

Cost-Effective Solutions
For many of todays sustainable products, cost is one of the
key barriers that prevents many customers from making
the switch from their dependence on non-sustainable
products. Therefore, the designer and decision-makers are
responsible for reducing the cost of current sustainable
products
Renewable Energy
Designers should stop depending on carbon energy and think
in terms of building products that depend on renewable
energy, such as solar panels and wind farms.

Materials and Recycling

Similar to energy, materials play an essential role in sustainable
design, as every designer should search for materials that can
be easily recycled or for which the planet can recreate in a
short amount of time.
For example, IKEA depends on mixed woods and innovative
materials to replace traditional varieties of wood that can
take a long time to grow in forests. The mixed and recycled
materials can also help reduce product cost.
Durable Design Solutions
In order to reach zero waste, products have to either
be durable enough to last for a long time or be fully
recycled and transformed completely into new
products. Depending on both methods can help recycle
products more than one time and decrease the
dependence on Earths resources.
Tips to design products that reduce environmental
impacts :

Materials:

think eco-fibre:
make it last:
enhance recyclability
reduce your VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds
Process:

less is more:
think life cycle:
be efficient:
make it multifunctional:
zero waste:
Marketing:

label it: labels are an essential part of a garment and a

great way to communicate eco-options to consumers.
For example include information about ethical
construction

look for certification: ask your suppliers,

manufacturers and contractors to provide you with
independently verified certifications for environmental
management and ethical practices

offer a service: why not take your product back or let

customers trade it in when they are finished with it? Then
you can re-construct it into something new or donate it
to charity.
Application in Fashion Industry:
There are a number of techniques, strategies,
alternative processes and approaches you can take to
design products that have a low environmental impact
and positive social purpose.

Zero waste pattern cutting

It has been estimated that 15% of textiles intended for
clothing ends up on the cutting room floor

Minimal seam construction

Some companies, like The North Face, are investing in
technology that can fuse seams together, meaning no
sewing required.
Upcycling

Design for longevity

Craft preservation

Design for disassembly (Dfd)

This strategy means the product will need to be
easy to assemble as well and could likely require
fewer materials - meaning it could help save
costs and your products environmental
footprint.
Design Tools that helps in achieving sustainabilty

Brands and manufacturers can evaluate the impact of textiles by

subscribing to EcoMetrics, an online tool that measures the EDU
(environmental damage units) of textiles.

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition is an industry-wide group of

more than 100 leading apparel and footwear brands, retailers,
suppliers, nonprofits and NGOs working to reduce the
environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear
products around the world. Its focus is the Higg Index, which
measures the environmental performance and social impact of
apparel products.
Nike, a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, has
rolled out a new app called MAKING, which helps
designers invent more environmentally sound apparel.

Some of the most reputable brands such as Patagonia use

bluesign certification, a rigorous auditing system that
guarantees that products carrying the certification label are
made exclusively of a combination of components and
processes that are harmless to human beings and the
environment.
The clean Tee
It is known as the
most sustainable T-
shirt on the planet.
It has been invented
by the company of
Nomadix
It has been totally
made from recycled
textile waste,
without adding
water or dye
Sustainable colour
Direct communication
from designer to
vendor/textile mill
Designer presents a
colour fundament (QTX
file)
Right First Time (RTF)
dyeing
the fabrics will improve
and limit
the wastage of water,
energy, dyes
and chemicals
Recycling food
waste into fibre
Researchers have found
that citrus can be turn
into
raw materials and
afterwards, be spun into
yarns.

Algae-Based fabrics
Algae is a fast glowing
plants that does not
require irrigation
as they grow besides
rivers, lakes and oceans.
Organic Bamboo fibre
100 percent biodegradable
fibre that glows fast and
without the aid of chemical
agent
Eco Spun
Recycle plastic bottles which
has been converted
into polyester fibre
Organic Cotton fibre
Grown without artificial
herbicides or pesticides
Kooshoo's

Offers a wide range of

wearing starting from a
dress to a scarf
The dyeing process of

CONCLUSION
The future challenge to the fashion industry is to understand
the threats and take appropriate action to safeguard its
future, protect the environment and improve the lives of its
customers, workers and suppliers around the world.

Becoming Green could be the hottest

trend in the world

Designers, innovators, researchers, manufacturers as well as

consumers are all accountable to develop a Sustainable
Fashion Industry and enforce that the industry complies with
the Principles of Social, Economic and Ecological
Sustainability
