MECH3427 Design Project 2017

The document outlines a design project for a power transmission unit for an irrigation system. Students will be divided into groups to complete the project over multiple stages. The first stage involves considering design methodology, gear ratios, and draft assembly drawings. The second stage covers keys, couplings, belt/chain drives, and housing assembly. A final presentation and report are due at the end. The project aims to provide hands-on machine design experience while developing skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and time management.

Design Project for Mech3427

1. Objectives of the project

Design projects are used to expose students to real-world machine design problems, and to let them
solve these design problems by applying the knowledge learned throughout the curriculum. This
training includes the fostering of group interaction, independent thinking, decision-making, and
creativity, as well as the development of planning and problem-solving abilities.

2. Basic statement of the problem

You are required to design a power transmission unit for an irrigation system.
The schematic diagram of the irrigation system is shown below: Its functions are:
a) To receive power from an electrical motor through a rotating shaft.
b) To deliver the power to its output component that ultimately drives the conveyor belt via pulley
system (belt or chain driving system).

3. Design requirements
Normally, you are responsible for acquiring the necessary information and for making design
decisions at this point in the design process. You should discuss its desirable features with your
colleagues in marketing, sales, manufacturing planning, production management, field service, and,

perhaps, with customers. For this exercise, the kinds of information that you require are presented
as follows:
a) The speed (v) of conveyor belt is 0.65m/s.
b) The diameter of the rollers is 350 mm.
c) The force (F) needed for driving the conveyor belt is 6500 Newton. ,
d) The gearbox output is connected to a pulley system (belt or chain driving system). Moderate
shock will be encountered.
e) The gearbox is bolted to a rigid steel frame on a horizontal surface.
f) The rotational speed of the motor is 1440 rpm.
g) Flexible couplings will be used on input shaft to prohibit axial and bending loads from being
transmitted to the gear box.
h) The system is expected to operate 8 hours per day with a design life of 10 years.
i) The space needed for it should be as small as possible, and a lower cost is critical.

4. Procedure and presentation arrangements

There are 142 students in this course. Students will be divided into 29 groups of 5 students per group
(4 groups has 4 students). Each group has 15 minutes to present their project progress followed by a
5 minutes QA session. Power point presentation file should be prepared for all presentations. Please
notice that all media files should be playable under power point directly.

Stage 1:
1) Week 3 --- Design concerns, methodology and general layout of the system
What are the major concerns for designing the irrigation system? What is the methodology of
approaching this design problem? What speed ratio is used for the V -belt or chain drive? What
is your design for the V-belt or chain drive? What is the speed ratio of the gearbox? There are
three different general layouts for double-reduction:

Which layout do you select for double-reduction? Why? What speed ratio is used for each pair
of gears? What is the speed for each shaft? What is the input power for each shaft? What is the
torque for each shaft? Make a draft of assembly drawing to check whether the above design
requirements are satisfied.
2) Week 4 --- Design of the gears
Determine number of teeth, module (or diametral pitch), face width and pressure angle for each
gear by considering strength and wear. Search available gears from the market.
3) Week 5 --- Design of the shafts
The shaft must be designed by considering its strength and rigidity for bending and torsion. The
shaft design should also involve the mounting of gears and bearings. Make a 3D drawing for each
shaft.
4) Week 6 --- Design of the bearings
What is the load on each bearing? What types of bearing must be used? What is the design life
of the bearing? How to mount the bearings? Search available bearings from the market.
Stage 2:
5) Week 7 --- Design of the keys & shaft coupling
Key's width and height are determined based on the shaft diameter. The key length and material
are determined based on the torque. Select the appropriate shaft coupling method. Search
available motor and other components from the market.
6) Week 8 --- Design of V-belt or chain drive system
Determine all the necessary parameters for the Belt/chain drive system. Your group can select
either belt or chain drive system but need to justify the choice. Figure out all the major concerns
for implementing the system. Search available components from the market.
7) Week 9~10 --- Design of housing, assembly of all components for each subsystem
The housing design is both creative and practical. Is the strength of the housing structure all right?
How will the various elements be assembled into the housing? How will the gears and bearings
be lubricated? What material should be used? Show the assembly of components for each shaft.

3
Final presentation:
8) Week 12-13 --- Do a short final presentation & submit a simplified design project report.
All groups must attend and each group is expected to present for 5 minutes showing only an
assembly drawing, a table of critical data. Submit a simplified design project report for
supervisors comments.

5. Project submission
The following items should be submitted to the moodle by the end of April 2017.
a) Project report file (in pdf format)
b) All power point presentation files.
c) All virtual prototypes files, e.g Solidworks files (parts, assembly, drawings)

The report should be named as follows:

MECH3427_Project2017_Group##_report.pdf
The PowerPoint files should be compressed into a zip file and named as follows:
MECH3427_Project2017_Group##_ppt.pptx
The model files (parts, assemblies & drawings) should be compressed into a zip file and named as
follows:
MECH3427_Project2017_Group##_model.zip

6. Assessments
