Dump Height. 2.6m (8 %') (42007) y Charrfatan 3 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION For SAFETY as well as operator efficiency, the right hand should remain in contact with the Forward- Reverse and Braking control except when actuating another control. DO NOT operate this equipment unless you have thoroughly studied the Operator's Manual or have been instructed and trained by a competent operator. Engine must be shut off and key removed when operator leaves seat. Keep bystanders away from machine. All guards must be kept in place. It is prohibited to operate the Cherrington Beachcleaner at any time if the neutral start switch or the operator presence switch is non-operational. CAUTION! Because this machine has a relatively high center of gravity, SLOW DOWN when turn- ing. Be especially careful when turning uphill. ‘When operating parallel to a slope, operator should be on the high side. ‘Maximum slope for safe operation is ten degrees when running parallel tothe shoreline. Some grades ate too steep and should be cleaned perpendicular to the slope. Avoid taking dangerous chances. It is recommended that the operators wear safety glasses and hearing protection. Maintain 82.73kPa (12 PSI) tire pressure. Bach time that you operate the machine, perform the following routine checks: Check engine oil level. Check hydraulic fluid level. Check coolant level (if applicable). Check for fluid leaks in hydraulic lines and fittings. Operate the conveyor slowly and check for bent or broken parts, Check for operating clearance around the machine. Before driving off, be sure you are familiar with the sensitivity of the controls and how to use them safely. BEFORE OPERATING THIS MACHINE, read this publication carefully, along with the engine and hydraulics manuals, They contain maintenance, safety, and warranty information. Follow the recommendations to help assure safe, trouble. free operation. Follow the instructions provided in the engine manual for the engine break-in of your new machine. This recommended that you do not operate at maximum capacity (high engine speeds or extreme pressures on the power transmission system) during the first ten hours of operation. Always - even after the break-in Period, allow the engine and hydraulic system to warm up for atleast five minutes before driving off + Lower the digger front to the ground. *+ Shut off the conveyor, * Close the hopper. + Lower the hoist. * Stop the engine. + Remove the key. ‘om : Drove GENERAL OPERATING POINTS (NEW OPERATORS) Ground speed is the primary control to assure sand separation before it reaches hopper. Do not tow the machine even a foot without opening the pump bypass valve, and mechanically releasing the brake. Tf not inconvenient, dump hopper often. Do not slam hopper open or shut. Do not slam digger up and down, Rotate sereens before it’s too late. ‘Watch timing on conveyor chains. Have every operator read the manual. ‘Try not to close the hopper on trash. Always close hopper before raising or lowering hoist. ‘When turning, raise digger, stop conveyor and make slow short tarns. ‘Wash down and thoroughly inspect machine after each 8-hour shift. Use sweeps only for surface cleaning (approximately 2.5em (1”) deep) in dry sand and only after beach has been cleaned several times with standard width digger. MAXIMUM SLOPE FOR SAFE OPERATION IS 10 DEGREES. (4r2007) INSTRUMENTS AND CONTROLS Al al 1, IGNITION SWITCH - Controls the starting and stopping of the engine. ON/ACC Position ~ When the key is tured to the left in the switch, power is supplied to the accessories. OFF Position - When the key is vertical in the switch, power is diseonnected from the instrument panel and electrical control circuits. ON/RUN Position - When Key is tured to the right in the switch, power from the battery is supplied to the instrument panel and electrical control circuits 2. PUSH BUTTON STARTER SWITCH - When the button is pushed in, and with the transmission in neutral, the starter will be energized for starting the engine. Release the button as soon as the engine start. 3. FUEL GAUGE - Indicates the amount of fuel remaining in the 68-liter (18 gallon) fuel tank. 4, ENGINE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE - Indicates the pressure of the engine lubricating oil. 5. COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE - Indicates the engine coolant temperature, Under normal operating conditions, this gauge should indicate less than 93 degrees C (200 degrees F). 6. VOLTMETER GAUGE - Indicates the battery voltage. 7. FUSE, LIGHTS 25AMP - A 25 amp fuse is provided to protect the lighting circuit. 8. FUSE, FUEL SOLENOID 15 AMP -A 15 amp fuse is provided to protect the fuel solenoid. 9. OPERATOR PRESENCE INDICATOR LIGHT - When light is on indicates operator is present and that ‘engine can be started and run. 10, LIGHT SWITCH - When pulled out the lights will be turned on. When pushed in the lights are tuned off. 11, HYDRAULIC FLUID INDICATOR - When light is on, indicates that hydraulic fluid tank should be checked ‘for high fluid temperature or low fluid level. Hydraulic fluid temperature should not exceed 82 degrees C (180 degrees F) for any extended period. 12, TACHOMETER - Indicates the RPM's the engine is running at. The hour meter indicates the total operating hours of the engine. The right hand should be in contact with this control at all times, except when operating other controls, Must be in neutral position before engine ean be started. 13, THROTTLE LEVER — Regulates engine RPM. The left two notches are for engine starting and stopping, while the right notches are the normal operating ranges. ‘THROTTLE - TRANSMISSION LEVERS 12. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS WARNING WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE GROOMER AND/OR TIRES. 15. OSCILLATOR SPEED CONTROL - Regulates the oscillator frequency. Oscillator speed should not exceed 675 RPM. The oscillator speed should be routinely checked and the limit stop set accordingly. 16. CONVEYOR SPEED CONTROL - Infinitely regulates the surface speed ofthe conveyor 17. DIGGER CONTROL LEVER - Moving the lever up raises the digger point. Moving the lever down lowers the digger point. When released the lever automatically retums to neutral. Always shut off screen when digger is lifted. 18. SCREEN CONTROL LEVER - Moving the lever down allows the conveyor and oscillator to run forward. Moving the lever up allows conveyor to reverse, to clear obstructions. Before attempting {o reverse the conveyor, both the oscillator speed and conveyor speed valve hendles should be rotated clockwise tothe stops. The conveyor will not reverse propery if his is not done. The lower (forward) Position is detented, while the upper (reverse) position automatically returns to neutral when released, 19. HOPPER CONTROL LEVER - Moving the lever dow closes the hoppet. Moving the lever up allows the hopper to dump. When released the lever automatically retums to neutral 20. HOIST CONTROL LEVER - Moving the lever up raises the hopper. Moving the lever down lowers the hopper. Conveyor Control Lever 19. Hopper Control Lever 20, Hoist Control Lever (20071) ERATING PROCEDURES 1. With forward-reverse lever in neutral, start engine at idle speed. 2. Raise the digger. Set groomer control to desired setting. Unlocked, the groomer will operate multaneously with digger point. Groomer can be locked in any position by closing valve when it is in the desired position. 3. Remove digger lift cylinder safety stop. Place the 3.8 cm, 3.2 em, and 2.5 em (1-1/2”, 1-1/4”, and 1”) stroke limiters on ram of digger lift cylinder. The best starting combination is where the digger is allowed to just touch the surface when the machine is parked on level cement. 4. Move the oscillator and conveyor speed control handles clockwise to the stops. 5. Speed the engine up to 2200-2700 RPM's. 6. With your right hand on the forward-reverse lever, start the machine forward slowly about 8 km (12 mph). 7. Engage the screen control and lower the digger point simultaneously. 8, Move the forward-reverse lever to the right to increase ground speed until sand goes no farther than halfway up the sereens before sifting through. Keep your hand in contact with this lever so that you can increase or decrease ground speeds, or stop movement, as the situation requires, except when actuating another control. 9. Depth, forward speed and screening action must be adjusted so that there is a minimum of build up in front of the digger points, and no sand is being carried up into the hopper. 10. Increase or decrease the digger depth using different combinations of stroke limiters on the digger cylinder ram. It is inefficient to dig deep in damp sand, never dig deeper than necessary. A better- Jooking beach can be maintained by cleaning half as deep, twice as fast, and twice as often. 11, Increasing the engine RPM will increase the ground speed and the horsepower. Ifthe engine labors ‘excessively, decrease your ground speed. 12. To pick up weeds along the tide line, where itis always wet, go slow and regulate the depth of dig- ger so that just the weeds and surface trash are picked up with a minimum of sand penetration. 13, If the beach is covered with heavy debris, go slowly and skim the surface the first time over, dig- ging progressively deeper on each subsequent cleaning until the sand is conditioned. We suggest that large, heavy trash that might damage the conveyor or sereens be picked up manually. 14, Where there are large quantities of small stones or shells, it’s usually best to travel slowly with a relatively high engine RPM and conveyor speed. 15. Do not intentionally run over bottles with the tires. You are least likely to break bottles if you slow of stop the conveyor just before the digger reaches the bottle. AAs soon as the bottle is on the conveyor, resume conveyor speed. The surest and safest way to keep from breaking bottles is to pick them up manually. 16. Keep an eye on the conveyor. Occasionally a stone or other trash will cause one of the chains to jump out of time on the sprockets. (See Conveyor Maintenance, page 21). They can be slipped back into place using a pinch bar over one of the flights and under the rear shaft to rotate the con- veyor while using a heavy screwdriver to raise the chain up and over the sprocket teeth until they are back in time. NEVER CONTINUE TO RUN THE CONVEYOR WHEN IT IS OUT OF ‘TIME. 17, Always operate digger and screen controls simultaneously so that the sereens do not shake when out of the sand. Wrcradrson B (wana) SCREEN AND FLIGHT ADJUSTMENTS Several factors cause screen and flight wear, some of which are controllable to a certain extent. These factors and some of the possible solutions are as follows: 1. Rocks about the same size of the holes becoming imbedded in the screens. ‘These small rocks soon wear a groove in the flights, Solution: These small rocks must be manually removed at least at the end of the shift. 2. Running the conveyor faster than necessary. Every time a flight passes the screen, it experiences wear, Solution: An operator must lea to run the conveyor as slowly as possible and still do the job. Normally, the surface speed of the conveyor is approximately the same as the ground speed. 3. Running the oscillator faster than necessary. Solution: Adjust oscillator control stop so that oscillator does not exceed 675 RPM. Many times itis possible to run it slower, thus reducing the hammering effect of the screens against the flights. In loose, dry, level sand it may be possible to stop the oscillator (rotate oscillator control so that screens are even with each other). This will prolong the overall machine life, and cause machine to pick up fines more efficiently, such as cigarette butts and matchsticks. 4. Unnecessarily slow forward movement of the machine. Solution: Always keep your right hand on the transmission control allowing for a forward speed as fast as possible while still achieving sand separation. The quicker you get the beach clean, the fower cycles of the flights over the screen. We recommend that your routine cleaning depth is 3.81 cm (1-1/2") to 5.08 om (2”) deep, so that you can keep your forward speed up. The following method may be used to help determine optimum conveyor and oscillator speeds. 1. Set your conveyor and oscillator at maximum speed, 2. Ascertain your highest rate of forward beachcleaning speed attainable without overloading the engine or taking sand into the hopper. 3. Slowly adjust conveyor speed down to the slowest effective speed (usually about ground speed). Do not slow forward speed while doing this, 4, Do the same with the oscillator, Since different conditions will alter these requirements (wet, stony, weeds, etc), it will be necessary to ‘monitor your settings when these change. “mn » Drees VENTIVE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE SHOURS BEGINNING OF SHIFT 1. Grease all sleeve bearings. Wipe off excess grease. (Do not grease pillow block or flange bearings daily.) ‘See lubrication schedule (page 19). 2. Drain water and sediment from bottom of fuel filter. 3. Drain condensation from hydraulic sump. 4. Check fluid levels of radiator, hydraulic oi, and engine oil 5. Tighten leaking hydraulic fittings if required. END OF SHIFT 1. Hose down with fresh water, 2. Inspect entire machine for damage and repair before placing back in serv 40 HOURS 1, Change engine oil and filter. 2, Inspect and replace necessary wear parts, 3, Grease all pillow block and flange bearings on oscillator shaft and both conveyor shafts with a lithium base grease conforming to a NLGI grade #2. Because of special seals, you must use a hand-operated grease gun and pump very slowly, while slowly rotating the bearing, Be extra careful to keep grease fittings and coupler on grease gun clean. (See lubrication schedule, page 19). 4, Check and tighten whee! lug nuts and bolts. 5, Re-torque the axle hex nuts to 508 Nm(375 ft/Ibs.). EVERY 200 HOURS: 1. Tighten wheel lug nuts and bolts.* 2. Re-torque the axle hex nuts to 508 Nm (375 f./Ibs.)*. *(Failure to do so will void the warranties on the wheel and wheel motor assemblies.) 500 HOURS 1. Change hydraulic fluid and filters. NOTES: 1. Donot service the air cleaner filter other than when indicated by the restriction indicator. It is best to re~ place the element with a new one. Do not change hydraulic filters other than when indicated by the pressure and/or vacuum indicator, or on the 500-hour schedule, Keep a close eye on all gauges and indicators. Keep fins on radiator and heat exchanger clear. Allow a few minutes warm up time before starting out at the beginning of the shift. ‘When storing, remove the stroke limiters and safety stop from the digger cylinder. Retract all cylinder rams and lubricate the conveyor chain with a penetrating type chain and cable tube. ava Wrenn M wn MAINTENANCE AND ILLUSTRATIONS BATTERY ‘The battery is located in the battery box on the right side of the machine. To remove the battery, unlock and remove battery box cover, Remove positive and negative terminals from posts and remove hold down bracket that secures battery. Lift battery from battery box. MASTER POWER SWITCH The battery power source can be dis- connected by means of a master power switeh located on the front right main frame of the machine. RESTRICTION INDICATOR LOCATION AIR CLEANER Inspect air eleaner and hose periodically to maintain maximum engine protection. Assure that the hose between air cleaner and engine is clamped securely in place. Do not service the air cleaner filter other ‘than when indicated by the restriction indicator. It is best to replace the element with a new one. (#12007) 15 Wrenesrtiton MAINTENANCE AND ILLUSTRATIONS CLEANING RADIATOR The radiator must be kept clean to prevent the engine fom overheating. Check this daily and, if neces- sary, clean any debris away from the radiator fins. In extremely dusty conditions this should be checked more often, SERVICE FUEL SYSTEM Drain water from fuel flter/water separator at beginning of each shif, or each time machine is used, by loosening drain plug on canister. Tighten plug after draining. FUEL FILTER? WATER ‘SEPERATOR FUEL TANK, FUEL FILLER CAP The engine nuns on No. 1-D or 2-D automotive type diesel fuel. Use No. 2D diesel fuel at temperatures above -7 degrees C (20 degrees F) and No. |L-D for temperatures below that level. Wr en r0n 16 (4/2007) MAINTENANCE AND ILLUSTRATIO! Change oil and cil filter at the end of the first 8 hours of use, and every 40 hours thereafter, If possible, run engine just before changing oil because warm oil flows better and carries more contaminants than cold oil LOWER ALTERNATOR) | RADIATOR HOSE COOLANT IN COOLING SYSTEM Check coolant level daily or each time machine is used. Raise digger fully and install digger cylinder safety stop along with depth control spacers. Raise hopper and install hoist cylinder safety stops. Remove conveyor guard. Remove the chain lift mechanism from the toolbox and mount on angle supporting left side of fuel tank. Insert hook in lower flight blade and lift handle over center to lock. Remove the plow bolts that attach the screen to the screen frame. Lift and slide the screen out of the rear of the machine. To reinstall the screen, reverse the above procedure. For longer screen life and more even weer, rotate screens end for end, Changing the digger point requires the removal of 8 boits. Reinstall the digger point by reversing the procedure.
