Portfolio Task 3 - Running Records

The document is a portfolio submission for a course on assessment in education. It includes 3 students' running records of a video showing a child, Diego, interacting over a toy car. It also includes a section where the students discuss difficulties and strategies for conducting running records based on their experience recording the video. They discuss issues like focusing on one student, determining relevant details, and completing the record concurrently with observation. Their proposed strategies include watching multiple times, using short forms, and ensuring context. They are asked how these strategies could be applied when conducting live running records as an education assistant.

I understand Sheridan policies on academic offences, and have reviewed

statements pertaining to plagiarism for this course.

I have viewed and completed the Academic Honesty Tutorial and Quiz,
found in my course content folder, and on the Library Services site.

This is to certify that I have reviewed the work I am submitting here (and/or
uploading to the Assignment Dropbox) and have taken care to ensure that it is
my own work / words.

I have not used 5 or more consecutive words from another source, without
quotes and un-cited; I understand mosaic plagiarism and have not re-worded
sentences from other sources. I have not represented the ideas of others as my
own. Where relevant, I have included a bibliography of all sources used in
preparing this work.

Diego is standing at the side of a couch, expressing his frustration through body language
to Adult L about Child F not giving back his toy car. Adult L is stressing to Diego that he

needs to use his words when asking Student F for his car back, instead of just grabbing it.
After a few seconds of Adult L stating that Diego needs to use his words, Diego said
mine. Child F still denied giving back Diegos car. Diego continued to grab and reach
for the toy car. After pulling hard enough, he retrieved it without using any words.
Another adult walked in, intervened and removed Child F from the situation. Adult L
stresses to Diego he needs to use his words afterwards and say no Child F it is mine,
even though he did not use his words in the first place. After Diego receives his car, he
begins to feel relaxed, while playing with his car by himself off to the side on a bench,
near the window. Diego is interested in the book Adult L is reading, therefore he stopped
rolling the car on the ground and stands up to listen to the story. The other kids in the
room, start to wonder where Student F went, as Deigo continues to stay engaged in the
book and not notice Student F coming back into the room, as the other kids did.

How will you apply some of these strategies when conducting Running Records in
class, as an EA?
Remove yourself from the situation as much as possible to ensure you are a non-
participant observer. Ensure there is adequate support in the room so you can
maintain the non-participant role throughout.
Park any biases before observation occurs and write as objectively as possible.
Utilize short form words/sentences to record all relevant information for the

running record and elaborate at a later time.

Have a backup recording method. If using technology, have chargers. Keep pen
and paper handy in case technology fails, so you can continue observing and
recording.
Develop observation and note taking skills that work best for you.
