Auto Mesh Options

The document discusses the Floor Auto Mesh Options and Wall Auto Mesh Options forms in ETABS. These forms allow the user to control how shell objects like floors and walls are meshed or divided into elements during analysis. The forms provide options to automatically mesh at structural lines, manually specify the mesh, or prevent meshing to treat the shell as a single element. Parameters can also be set for rectangular mesh size and adding restraints at mesh boundaries.

Floor Auto Mesh Options

Form: Shell Assignment - Floor Auto Mesh Options

During analysis, ETABS automatically meshes shell objects that are assigned deck properties or slab
properties with membrane behavior only. Meshing helps distribute loads realistically. In some cases,
automatic meshing of a shell object into the analysis model may not be desired; click here for an
example. Use the Shell Assignment - Floor Auto Mesh Options form to control meshing of shell
objects.
1. Select the shell object to be meshed (divided) or marked so as not to be meshed.
2. Click the Assign menu > Shell > Floor Auto Mesh Options command to access the Shell
Assignment - Floor Auto Mesh Options form.
3. Select the appropriate option(s). As noted on the form, some meshing options do not apply to
inclined floors:
Default option. If the selected shell object is a horizontal deck or membrane slab, the default
automatically "cookie cuts" at beams and walls, thereby transferring loads, as appropriate, to
and from beams and walls . If the selected shell object is a horizontal shell or layered shell slab,
the default uses automatic rectangular meshing. If the selected shell object is an inclined floor,
the default is not automatic meshing.
For Defining Rigid Diaphragm and Mass Only (No Stiffness - No Vertical Load Transfer -
Applies to Horizontal Floors Only) option. No stiffness or vertical load transfer associated with
these objects will be considered during the analysis.
No Auto Meshing (Use Objects as Structural Elements) option. Tags the shell object
to not be automatically meshed by ETABS into the analysis model, thereby treating the object
as a Structural Element.
Mesh Object into ___ by ___ Elements (Applies to 3 or 4 noded objects only with no
curved edges) option. If the selected object has no curved edges and is defined by 3 or 4
nodes, this option can be used to mesh the selected shell object into a specified number of
elements in the local 1 direction and a specified number of elements in the local 2 direction.
Auto Cookie Cut Object into Structural Elements option. Allows control of meshing according
to the following:
o Mesh at Beams and Other Meshing Lines (Applies to Horizontal Floors
Only) option. Similar to the default option.
o Mesh at Vertical/Inclined Wall Edges (Applies to Horizontal Floors Only) option.
Meshes the selected object at walls, thereby transferring loads, as appropriate, to and
from walls.
o Mesh at Visible Grids (Applies to Horizontal Floors Only) option. Meshes the
selected objects at grid lines used in the model.
o Further Mesh Where Needed to Maximum Element Size of {specify value} option.
Meshes the selected object(s) using the specified maximum element size.
Add Restraints on Edge if Corners have Restraints check box. When this check box is
checked, ETABS adds restraints at the mesh joints on the edges of the meshed object if the
selected object has restraints assigned to the joints defining the corners of the shell object.
Advanced - Modify/Show Auto Rectangular Mesh Settings button. Click the button to display
the Automatic Rectangular Mesh Options (for Floors) form. Use the form to specify how and
where the object will be meshed and the approximate maximum size of the mesh when floor-
type shell options use auto rectangular meshing.
3. Click the Apply button to complete the assignment.

When the Apply button is used, the Shell Assignment - Floor Auto Mesh Options form will
remain open until it is closed by clicking the Close button. This allows selection of another shell
object(s), to which a different assignments can be made.

If only one assignment is being made to only one set of selected objects, the OK button can be
used to both apply the assignment and close the form.

Wall Auto Mesh Options

Form: Shell Assignment - Wall Auto Mesh Options
Use the Shell Assignment - Wall Auto Mesh Options form to control meshing of shell objects.
1. Select the wall object to be meshed or marked so as not to be meshed.
2. Click the Assign menu > Shell > Wall Auto Mesh Options command to access the Shell
Assignment - Wall Auto Mesh Options form.
3. Select the appropriate option(s):
Default: No Meshing for Straight Walls and Auto Rectangular Meshing for Curved
Walls option. The selected object will not be meshed if the wall is straight. If the wall is curved,
the Auto Rectangular Mesh Settings (see below) will be applied in meshing the wall.
Mesh Object into {Specify Number} Vertical and {Specify Number} Horizontal option.
Specify how the object is to be meshed by specifying the number of vertical and horizontal
elements.
Auto Rectangular Mesh option. The Auto Rectangular Mesh Settings will be applied in
meshing the wall (see text for Advanced - Modify/Show Auto Rectangular Mesh
Settings button below and the Automatic Rectangular Mesh Settings (for Walls) topic).
Click the button to display
the Automatic Rectangular Mesh Settings (for Walls) form. Use the form to specify the
approximate maximum size of the mesh when wall-type shell options use auto rectangular
meshing.
4. Click the Apply button to complete the assignment.

When the Apply button is used, the Shell Assignment - Wall Auto Mesh Options form will
remain open until it is closed by clicking the Close button. This allows selection of another shell
object(s), to which a different assignments can be made.

If only one assignment is being made to only one set of selected objects, the OK button can be
used to both apply the assignment and close the form.
