Edu Paper

The document discusses national educational technology standards for students, including the NETS-S six standards of creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, research and information fluency, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, digital citizenship, and technology operations and concepts. It provides examples of lesson plans that align with each standard, and explains how the standards affect technology teaching requirements at different grade levels. Abstract

I will be mainly focusing on the national educational technology standards for students (NETS-S),

CCSD Technology Education Standards, and Nevada Performance Indicators. I will first explain

what the NETS-S six standards are by giving my own definition of them too. Those six standards

are creativity and innovation, communication and collaboration, research and information fluency,

critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making, digital citizenship, Technology operations

and concepts. In each of the six standards, I will give examples of lesson ideas that could be use

based on them. While in the end of the essay I discuss how those standards effect technology

teaching in different grade levels and the knowledge between technology teachings in the grade

levels affect teachers choice. Then towards the very end of the essay I will write about why

technology teaching is important to me.

National Technology Standards

Today's students need to be able to use technology to analyze, learn and explore.(ISTE,

2012, para.2). This is very true since we are in the information age where almost everything is

done on the internet. Thats why those guidelines are for students to learn evaluation skills and

have knowledge in digital world. The standards are from the organization called National

Educational Technology Standards for students (NETS-S) that have six guidelines in it.

The first standard is creativity and innovation that is about students using their creative

thinking and knowledge in technology to form new ideas, products, or processes (Lever-Duffy &

Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1). A lesson idea based on it would be for students to go to a website

where they would create a book online and do their own drawings. They make the book about a

fun day they had. After that, the students can print it out and show it to their parents at home. The

book project involves 1a apply existing knowledge to generate, new ideas, and process (Lever-

Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1).

The second standard is communication and collaboration. This is about students being able

to communicate and collaboration individual and with other students through the use of

technology (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1). A lesson idea based on it would be to

read folktale books from different cultures that similar to American folktale stories. In the lesson I

read a story out aloud using the LCD projector. Then ask the class what the folktale reminded

them of and how it is similar and different. After that, student picks a book from the classroom

and use Microsoft Word to type up the similar and differences. The lesson uses 2c develop

culture understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other culture (Lever-

Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1).

The third standard is research and information fluency. This is about students using

technology to gather, evaluate, and use information (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1).

A lesson idea based on it is for students to learn base computer skills. I would first show them a

PowerPoint on how to use Google, close tabs, open new tabs, and etc. Then students demonstrate

those skills on the computer. When the students are done, the class wills discussion about the

activity they did. The lesson is 3b locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically

use information from a variety of sources and media (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011

pg.1).

The fourth standard is critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. This is about

students identifying problems, plan and do research to find a solution or make appropriate

decision using technology (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1). An example of a lesson

idea based on it would be to show incorrect sentences on the smart board and ask the students

how it should be correct. Then I would correct it on the smart board. After this, students would

get index cards with sentences they must correct. This involves 4b plan and manage activities to

develop a solution or complete a project (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1).

The fifth standard is digital citizenship. This is about students learning the importance of

technology relating to human, culture, societal issues and practice legal and ethical behavior.

(Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1). A lesson idea base on it is explain in a PowerPoint

about computer safely and how to know if the source is creditable by it having .edu .org and etc.

Students also type what they learned about this lesson. This is 5a advocate and practice safe,

legal, and responsible use of information and technology (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011

pg.1).

The last standard is technology operations and concepts. This is about students

understanding technology system, concepts, and operations (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald,

2003/2011 pg.1).A lesson idea base on it is to teach students how to use Microsoft Word to type

essays then they make a PowerPoint about it. They also present their PowerPoint to the class and

talk about how to use the program. This is 6b select and use applications effectively and

productively (Lever-Duffy & Mcdonald, 2003/2011 pg.1).

Those standards (NETS, CCSD Technology Education Standards, and Nevada Performance

Indicators) affect teaching by requiring teachers to integrate technology in their classroom and

having students be technology literate in different grade levels. One requirement is by the time

students finish the eighth grade they should be technology literate (Duffy and Mcdonald 2011).

They also affect the teacher choice by them needing to use variety digital media. This why

technology teaching is important because teachers have to know the requirements and integrate

technology on the lessons.
