2nd Grade Math Lesson 3

The document provides a lesson plan for a 2nd grade math lesson on equal group stories and multiplication. The lesson uses pennies and cards as manipulatives to represent wheels, buttons, etc. in word problems with equal groups. Students will draw 4 equal group stories on a worksheet based on scenarios acted out with the manipulatives. An exit ticket asks students to draw another equal group story. The teacher will observe students and collect worksheets to assess understanding.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Amanda Entringer

Grade Level: 2nd grade
School: Chester Elementary School
Date: Wednesday, April 5th, 2017
Time: 11:30-11:45

Reflection from prior lesson:

During yesterdays lesson the students worked on area and using 1 inch square tiles to
see how many can fit into a specific space. The students have a good idea about the
concept of area and that it is the space inside an object. The lesson today is more
focused on multiplication which will eventually be used when working with area.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.3 Determine whether a group of objects (up to
20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting
them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal
addends.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP5 Use appropriate tools strategically.
CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP7 Look for and make use of structure.

Lesson Objectives:
Given an explanation of how to draw pictures for equal group stories, students
will complete 4 equal group stories with 100% accuracy.

Materials Needed:
Pennies and cups for pennies
Cards
Lesson Worksheet

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics:

Students might mishandle the pennies or the cards, so emphasize in the beginning of
the lesson and even model how to handle them correctly or the students will not be able
to use them for the remainder of the lesson. These manipulatives in this lesson can be
very powerful for student learning, but also very distracting so try structure the
environment so students must listen to direction instead of doing whatever they want.
A. The Lesson

1. Introduction (3 minutes)
Im thinking about making homemade mini pizzas for me and my roommates
tonight. If I make 3 pizzas total and on each pizza I put 5 pepperonis. (Draw on
the board 3 pizzas with 5 pepperonis on each pizza)
How many pepporonis would I need total if I have 3 groups of 5 pepperonis? 15
put your thumb up if you agree that I will need 15 pepperonis and put your thumb
down if you disagree with this statement. How did you get 15?
Today we are going to learn how to draw pictures for equal groups stories. I
know those words might seem a little confusing right now but what I just did
drawing the pizza and pepperonis is what you are going to do today.

2. Content Delivery (15 minutes- I will be walking students through each of the equal
group stories and observe how they are creating them with their pennies and cards as
well as how they are drawing them on the worksheet.)
We are going to use pennies and cards to act out our stories today. Now
remember if you misuse your pennies or your cards you will have to put them
away and finish doing the worksheet without them.
We are going to pretend that the pennies are wheels, buttons, candy hearts, and
cookies. We are going to pretend that the cards are cars, shirts, cupcakes,
bicycles, and children
Pass out the pennies and the cards to the students.
I want you to put the cards in the upper right hand of your desk.
Walk the students through the first story. Put 5 cards in front of you. Lets
pretend that these are five cars. How many wheels does a car have? 4 Good so
pretend you pennies are wheels and put them on the car.
How many cars are there? 5 and how many wheels are on each car? 4 so how
many wheels did you show altogether? 20
I wil then pass out Worksheet 116
Now we are going to draw ou equal-group stories on our worksheet from what
you just created with the cards and then pennies.
Walk students through drawing 5 cars with 4 wheels to represent the first story.
We will then go through the following 3 equal group stories, allowing students
time after each story they create with their cards and pennies to draw their story
on their worksheet and explain their story.
The stories continue with 3 shirts (cards) with 5 buttons (pennies) on each shirt, 6
cupcakes (cards) with 3 candy hearts (pennies) on each cupcake, and 8 bicycles
(cards) with 2 wheels (pennies) on each bike.
Students will not complete the bottom of each section on the worksheet because
that will be used when they learn how to write number sentences for equal group
stories.

3. Closure (2 minutes)
Turn and tell a partner one thing that you learned today. Provide students a
short time to discuss what they learned. I will be listening to students discussion
and maybe even talk briefly with a couple groups. Who would like to share
something that they learned today?
Exit Ticket:
Draw an equal group story for 3 boxes of 6 doughnuts.

B. Assessments Used
Observation- I will be observing students as they draw their equal group stories
as well as when they turn and talk with their partner at the closure of the lesson.
Worksheet- Students will draw their equal group stories on a worksheet and I will
collect them to assess students understanding of the concept so far.

C. Differentiated Instruction
Remediation- If students are struggling with concept they would only need to draw 3 out
of the 4 equal group stories on the worksheet.
Enrichment- For the exit ticket students could write and draw their own equal group
story instead of just drawing the one I share with them.
Language Support- I will read the directions aloud to the students and walk them
through creating their equal group stories.
