Program Notes

A Christmas Fanfare combines the melodies from In Excelsis Deo and Deck the Halls to create
an energetic fanfare that stays within the range of young band musicians. The piece is written
primarily with the first six notes that most band students learn, and it provides excellent
opportunities to develop ensemble playing, dynamic expression, style, and percussion
techniques.

Rehearsal Suggestions

As is the case with any arrangement, students should be made aware of the original songs from
which the composition draws its melodies. Directors may consider teaching unison versions of
In Excelsis Deo and Deck the Halls prior to teaching this piece, or at least teaching students to

sing the songs.

Students should be made aware of which other instruments their part lines up with (for example,

Encourage the musicians to make obvious and noticeable differences in the dynamics. This will

About the Composer

Randall Standridge was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He attended college at Arkansas State
University, where he received a Bachelor of Music Education and Masters of Music in
Composition. He has studied composition with Dr. Tom OConnor and Dr. Tim Crist. His
Pr

works are gaining attention on the national and international level with performances at several
state conferences and the Midwest Clinic. In 2010, his work "Art(isms)" became his first
commission to be performed at a CBDNA conference. His music has also been included in the
series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band. Randall Standridge is currently the
Director of Bands at Harrisburg Public Schools in northeast Arkansas, where he continues to
compose for young and advanced band.
