The Colonial Revival style was popular from 1895-1940 and was inspired by the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. It featured symmetrical facades, rectangular massing, side gable roofs, double hung windows with shutters, and centered entries accented with columns. Brick and wood clapboard were common siding materials. The style drew from earlier Georgian, Federal, and Adam styles as well as Dutch Colonial architecture.

Colonial

Revival Style
Home
By: Caroline Hobbs
Backround
Period of popularity: 1895 1940 (mostly 1920s, prior to the Great Depression)
The Colonial Revival style was initially inspired by the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial, essentially
Americas first-ever Worlds Fair.
The event sparked a new interest in the American colonial past, in contrast to earlier decades when
colonial architecture had been dismissed.
Architects were studying colonial styles throughout New England by the 1890s. A decade later,
colonial revival emerged as a dominant style for domestic buildings nationwide and remained popular
up through World War II.
Earlier Georgian and Adam styles provided the backbone for revival ideas, with a secondary influence
of Dutch Colonial (with its characteristic dual-pitched, Gambrel roof).
Characteristics
similar to georgian, federal, adam, greek styles
machine-made woodwork that had less depth and belief than earlier hand-made versions.
A symmetrical faade, but may have side porches or sunrooms on either or both sides.
Rectangular Mass
1-2+ stories
Usually a medium pitched, side-gable roof with narrow eaves. Hipped roofs and dormers are occasionally seen.
Multi-pane (six-over-six or six-over-one lights are common), double-hung windows with correctly proportioned
shutters, bay windows.
The entrance is centered and accented with columns, pilasters, pediment, and/or maybe hooded to create a covered
porch. It may have a fanlight or transom, sidelights, and/or a paneled door
Brick or wood clapboard is the most common siding, but shingle is occasionally seen especially on more informal New
England style Capes.
Other design elements may include classical columns, two-story pilasters, quoins at corners, dentil trim under eaves,
or Palladian windows.
