carryingcoilsitstrikesmethatperhapstherealenergycomesfromBetaparticles(fastelectrons)absorbedintotheelectrical
circuit.

ToextractenergyfromBetaparticlesitisnotjustenoughtocapturethem.Clearlythiswillresultinacurrentflowaccordingto
thecapturerate,butcurrentbyitselfisnotpower.Thekineticenergyoftheparticlemustbecapturedandthiswillresultin
potentialdifferenceorvoltage.IfaBetaparticleentersathinfoilconductornormaltoitssurfaceandiscaptured,thenthe
potentialdifferenceassociatedwithgivingupitskineticenergycanbeexpectedtooccuracrosstheoppositefacesofthefoil.If
howevertheBetaparticlewereturnedsoastoenteratashallowgrazingangletothesurface,notonlywouldtheprobabilityof
capturebeincreased(sincetheparticlewilltravelfurtherwithinthematerial)butthepotentialdifferencewilloccuralongthe
lengthofthefoil.Betaparticlestravellingevenatrelavisticvelocitiescanbeturnedwithinshortdistancesbyrelativelyweak
magneticfields,sotheconceptshowninthefollowingFiguresuggestsitself.

AradioactiveBetasourceisatthecentreofaspirallywoundcoilofthinconductivefoil,e.g.copperoraluminium(insulation
betweenturnsisomittedforclarity).BetaparticlestravellingradiallyfromthissourcetravelatrightanglestoaDCmagneticfield
(e.g.fromapermanentmagnet),hencefollowcircularpaths,theyspiraloutwards.Whentheirtrajectoriesalignwiththefoil
curvaturetheirprobabilityofcaptureincreases.Voltageimpulsesfromeachcapturearriveattheoutputterminalsallatthesame
polarity.

Thisissuchanobviousschemeforgettingelectricalpowerfromaradioactivesourcethatitisdifficulttobelievethatithasnot
beeninvestigatedbefore.Hasanyonetriedit?Perhapswithjustasingleturnoffoil.Doesithavetobeinvacuum?
