Maximum Normal Stress Theory of Failure (Brittle Materials) : Module 2-1a

This spreadsheet calculates whether a brittle material will fail based on the maximum normal stress theory. It takes principal stress values and material properties as input, then checks three equations to see if any stresses exceed the ultimate strength or fall below the compression strength divided by the safety factor. In this example, the first principal stress fails the check while the second and third pass.

Input the Yield point values and the Factor of Safety:
Suc = -135,000 psi (Compression Ultimate Strength)
Sut = 40,000 psi (Tension Ultimate Strength)
Nfs = 2.00 (Factor of Safety)

Check each of the three equations of the failure theory:

S uc
S 1 S ut
N fs N fs
-67,500 < 22,000 < 20,000 Fails

S uc S ut
S 2
N fs N fs
-67,500 < 2,000 < 20,000 Safe

Suc Sut
