- A capacitor consists of two conductors separated by an insulator. The type of insulator determines if the capacitor is polarized or non-polarized. - Common types of capacitors include mica, ceramic, and plastic film capacitors. Mica capacitors are small with a high working voltage. Ceramic disk capacitors are also small and non-polarized with relatively high capacitance. - Some capacitors, like electrolytic capacitors, are polarized and can only be connected in one orientation. Variable and trimmer capacitors allow their capacitance to be adjusted through external or internal controls.
