Ncpre Bombay
The centre is located at IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay was set up by an Act of Parliament and established in
1958, at Powai, a suburb of Mumbai. IIT Bombay has a strong tradition of inter-disciplinary activity. IIT
Bombay has a two decade old tradition of running programmes in Energy. This led to the setting up of
the Department of Energy Science and Engineering (DESE) at IIT Bombay in 2007, the first such
Department at any major academic institution in India.
Today, the Institute is recognized as one of the centers of academic excellence in the country. Over the
years, there has been dynamic progress at IIT Bombay in all academic and research activities.
Concurrently, facilities and infrastructure have been improved to keep abreast with the best institutions
in the world.
Profile
The National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE) at IIT Bombay was launched in
2010 and is a part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission of the Government of India.
The objective of the centre is to be the one of the leading Photovoltaic (PV) research and education
centres in the world within the next decade. NCPRE aims to create and execute the blueprint for human
resource development for PV in India.
The centre envisages both basic and applied research activities. The basic research activities include
silicon solar cell fabrication, characterization, energy storage, new materials and novel PV structures.
Development of power electronic interfaces for solar PV systems, new product designs, technology
assessment and broader issues like sociological and environmental impact are an important part of the
activities of the centre.
Eventually, NCPRE aims to make solar PV a cost-effective and relevant technology for meeting a
significant part of the energy needs of India.
Vision
NCPRE has set up a full-fledged facility for cell fabrication, characterization as well as PV modules and
systems, and works on significant areas of research in these areas. Manpower training in PV through
direct teaching, web and video courses, hands on training and through PUMP-In is envisaged.
In the second phase, the manpower training in PV through NCPRE will grow in magnitude as the JNNSM
accelerates its efforts to meet the target of 20 GW by 2022. The NCPRE will be well placed with the
sufficient experience and infrastructure for education and training to help the nation to meet its
demand.
Objectives:
The NCPRE will focus broadly on education and research in the area of solar Photovoltaics. The
objectives of NCPRE are categorized in three themes:
Project Objective:
Theme-2 Research
The objectives of NCPRE is divided in three themes. The specific objectivs of each theme is listed here:
i. Development of PV courses and labs for IITB students at all levels (B. Tech, M. Tech., M.Sc. and
Ph. D.)
ii. Development of web and video based PV courses.
iii. Availability of PV courses through distance education program to other institutes.
iv. Short term lab courses for students from other institutes.
v. Laboratory kit development, which can be disseminated to other academic institutes
vi. Training of industry personnel.
vii. Training of teachers and educators form other colleges and institutions.
viii. Training of Master Technicians for technician training.
Under Indian National PV users programme (INPUP), the following activities will be
undertaken:
i. Offer NCPRE facilities to conduct short term (103 months), medium term (3-24 months) long
term project (more than 24 months) to external users:
ii. Industry (Private and Public sector),
iii. Institutes (Academic & Scientific Laboratories) and.
iv. Entrepreneurs/Innovators (Incubation).
v. Offer short term workshops to external users.
vi. Offer hands-on training to external users.
vii. Allow external industry and academic users to access the facilities of NCPRE.
Theme-2. Research:-
The specific time bound deliverables of the research proposed under NCPRE are listed below:
Si Solar Cells:
A state of art modeling simulation, characterization and analysis facility for photovoltaic research and
training is proposed under this theme. The facilities are meant to extent an arm of support to Indian PV
companies and other research institutes pursuing research in PV. It will provide basic support to
photovoltaic research and production in India, as characterization plays a pivotal role in PV research
which is essential in realizing the breadth of new technologies on the horizon and to improve the
existing technologies to its maximum limit in order to lower the cost. Numbers of characterization
techniques are planned at each level (materials, cells, module)
