The mentor observed a classroom lesson and noted details about the teacher's actions and what was heard. It took over 30 minutes for the teacher to settle the class, explain the lesson, and allow for independent work time, which was only 10-15 minutes. Boys dominated discussions with the teacher. The mentor questioned the teacher about classroom rules, consequences, and how student success is measured. In reflection, the teacher aims to revisit expectations, shorten instruction time, and improve positioning in the classroom.

Summary of What I saw?
discussion and Teacher standing still directing students with hands and verbal actions arising: instructions Teacher greeting students Students placing iPads in basket Teacher positioning students in preferred seats Students setting up for learning, copying learning intention and success criteria Teacher instructing standing mainly within centre of room Students beginning work mostly on task Students sharing information by discussing, questioning and answering Dominant males answering and questioning teacher Visual Timer Reflection time What I heard? Instructions that were clear Friendly interactions Teacher check in with students for understanding Loud female banter Reminders from teacher to various students Rewards and positive affirmations to students Reminders of time allowances Warnings and reminders around behaviours x 2 Teacher summarise and reflect Summary of discussion: It took over 30min to settle students, conduct the warm up and explain the explicit teaching focus. This allowed for 10-15min of independent working time and then a very quick reflection as students were rushing out for lunch. Boys dominated the voice in the class and your time. You moved mainly within the inner circle of students. Questions from observation: What are your classroom rules? What are your classroom consequences? How are students held accountable for their choices, behaviours and work ethic? How is their learning successful? How do you know and how do you record their success or concerns? Was your four part lesson plan followed and did you feel successful? Reflection/Actions Arising: Reflecting on my conversation with Sue, going forward I would like to re-visit classroom expectations and shorten the time it takes to get into the independent activity. I will also work on moving within the inner circle of the room as well as the outer circle of the room in order to ensure my presence is felt by all students and that I am accessible to each student.
