Climate change (Environmental issues)
Divide the students into the groups of 4-5. Ask them to answer the questions in groups
1. What is externality? Give brief examples of externalities (both positive and negative) of
the following cases (each group is given one case, but can comment on other groups
answers):
a. Vaccination
b. Alcohol sales
c. Car manufacturing (during a construction of the new plant, and during their
operations)
d. A new airport in the city
e. A foreign direct investment by a Korean company, whereby chemical plant will be
opened in Uzbekistan
f. The same as above, but hotel will be opened in Uzbekistan
2. What is tragedy of commons? Can you give an example using an environmental issue?
3. What is prisoners dilemma? How can it applied to Environmental protection issues?
4. Could you please list out international conventions / treaties / agreements / institutions
that specialize on climate change / environmental protection issues?
5. How the externalities can be managed? What are the tools available?
6. What does the Kuznets environment curve say?
Discussion of news / articles
7. Please read about the following agreements / agendas using open sources, and tell in brief
what their main areas of focus are (15-20 minutes):
a. Group 1-2: Kyoto Protocol
b. Group 3-4: Agenda 21
c. Group 5( and 6 if any): Greenpeace

task as well. Please do reflection on the case by applying the concepts / terms used in the
lecture.
