SMALL GROUP GUIDE
The Spiritual Disciplines
WEEK 8: Celebration 1. We’re defining the spiritual disciplines as: a. Parts of the Christian life that allow us to better enjoy, experience and obey our God. 2. WORSHIP: a. Defined: To show adoration for; a deep love, or respect. b. In our culture: Idolization instead of God-worship i. Our culture idolizes: 1. People: Ourselves & our appetites, Movie stars, Sports figures, the incredibly wealthy, attractive, and those with dangerous jobs 2. Possessions: Money, cars, houses, boats, toys, etc. ii. What does God say? Exodus 20:3; Isaiah 42:17 c. Worshiping God is: i. A Response of GRATITUDE & AWE (Hebrews 12:28-29) for: 1. Who He is: a. Jeremiah 10:10 (He’s eternal) b. 1 John 4:16 (He is love) 2. What He’s Done: a. 1 John 4:10 (offered us salvation) b. Rev. 4:8 (Created magnificent beings) c. Job 38:4-5 (Created everything we know) ii. A Sacrifice. (Romans 12:1) d. In order to worship God fully we must: i. Be at peace with those around us (Matthew 5:23-24) ii. Make it about loving God from our hearts, not just going through the motions. 1. Mark 12:30; Matthew 15:8-9 e. The bottom line: The goal of Christian worship is to enjoy and proclaiming the awesomeness of God. Our job is to make everything we do, say and think about accomplishing these. ICE BREAKER: The ‘If You Really Knew Me’ activity DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. If you were with us, talk briefly about how you did with the goals you made last week (on Guidance). 2. Read Colossians 3:16. Okay be honest, is it weird that singing is part of worshipping God? Talk about what it would feel like to have people write songs to you. Now does it make sense? 3. Read Isaiah 42:17 & Romans 1:25-26 & discuss what makes idolization (or worshipping things that aren’t God) bad. 4. For us, it’s called pride/sin when we want to glorify or worship ourselves. Why is it okay for God to get glory and not us? a. Read Romans 5:8 & Matthew 5:48b for insight. 5. Read Romans 12:1. Talk about what it means to worship God in a way that involves sacrifice. 6. Now Read John 21:17 & 1 John 4:19. Can you worship God while helping or loving others? What would make it worship instead of just helping people? 7. Read Job 38:4-5, Job 40:15-24 & Revelation 4:8. These verses discuss God creating the Earth, a dinosaur known as the Brachiosaur & a crazy being that exists in heaven known as a ‘Seraphim.’ It’s things like these that should cause us to respond to God with worship. But not just ‘lovey-dovey’ worship. It’s a reverent, even fearful worship. Now read Psalms 2:11 & Hebrews 12:28-29. a. What do you think it means to fear God? b. How is fearing God part of worship? 8. There’s a quote that says, “The chief end of man (or main goal) is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” What can you do to enjoy God in every day life? What about in worship through music? 9. Now read Matthew 15:8-9. When we worship God through music, it’s either genuine or fake lip-service. Talk about what you can do to help you really worship at church and youth group. 10. Read 1 John 4:10. Discuss what you can do to develop a heart of gratitude toward God for sending His Son, instead of taking Him for granted. 11. As a group set some accountability and goals for how you can train your self in worship this week. PRAYER GROUPS: Students share prayer needs, especially making worship measurable this week. Pray for each other. 1
