Foreword
International agreements on CO2 reduction and European directives on the expansion of
renewable energy generation ensure that the rapid growth in renewable energy installations
will continue. Skills shortages in this sector are already being identified and the expected
growth will only exacerbate the situation. Within the rapidly expanding European renewable
energy industry, an urgent demand exists for more post-graduate trained staff, specialized in
renewable energy technology. EUREC Agency together with leading European Universities
involved in renewable energy education and training have responded to this demand through
the development of the European Master in Renewable Energy.
Five core universities and six specialisation universities across Europe, each one with
demonstrated experience in teaching and research excellence in a particular renewable
energy, have joined forces to create a unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of
their collective expertise and international networks.
I am very glad you chose Hanze UAS to be your core provider of the European Master in
Renewable Energy. On behalf of our staff I wish you a successful study and a very pleasant
stay in the beautiful city of Groningen.

Welcome
to the Master of Science in Renewable Energy programme in Groningen. One of Europes
biggest challenges is designing the transition towards a sustainable energy system
based on renewable energy. Energy scarcity and environmental problems are major
challenges. There is a need for highly skilled professionals with fundamental
interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and tools to tackle these challenges and find new
solutions. The combination of technical, strategic, social and environmental issues
encountered in the energy transition represents a significant multidisciplinary approach. It
requires more senior technical professionals and highly educated engineers who can
work with experts from other disciplines and carry out applied scientific research to come
up with practical solutions, by doing applied research, consultancy work or providing
strategy and policy advice. Completing the European Master in Renewable Energy
gives you a technical and systems perspective of energy transition challenges with a
focus on renewables. You will be able to design, test, and implement new technologies
with a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, making you essential to the whole energy
industry. In addition to this, the programme has a clear international focus, not only
because of the international student mix, but also because you are expected to follow
part of the programme at a second university in Europe. Gaining experience through real
life business cases and projects is another important characteristic of the programme.
This study guide provides you with the necessary information about the aims and structure of
the English Masters degree programme.

The most important legal rules that apply to this programme can be found in the following
documents:
Student Charter (https://www.hanze.nl/eng/study-at-hanze/education-in-the-
netherlands/legal-matters)
Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER)
Code of conduct (https://www.hanze.nl/eng/study-at-hanze/education-in-the-
netherlands/legal-matters)
All students who enrolled in the EMRE programme in Groningen are expected to be
familiar with these rules. If unclear or inconsistent information is provided, even in this
catalogue, then the formal rules always have priority.
The programme is divided into three semesters. During the core semester, you acquire a
solid foundation in the technical and engineering aspects related to innovative energy system
design and implementation and their various related interdisciplinary aspects. Theoretical
courses which also examine the socioeconomic issues surrounding the deployment of these
technologies are supported by laboratory workshops.
In the third semester, you apply your new knowledge and skills by means of a dissertation
which involves a research project at a company or a research center. The EUREC
consortium has a wide network of companies in the renewable energy industry where EMRE
students can do their research project. Students are also encouraged to find themselves a
company or research center for doing the research project. At the end of the masters
programme, you will present your final dissertation results to an assessment committee,
during the presentation days in Brussels.

5. Study Progress: rules and procedures
Each course has two exams (exam and resit) per module. Date and place of exams are
published online, in the courses time tables: Exam Schedule
When you dont agree with the result of an exam or a decision regarding examination, you can
send an appeal to the examination board within six weeks of publication of the result.
The Examination Board monitors, evaluates and adjusts the quality of the study programmes of
the Institute of Engineering, by means of supervising the examinations and the preliminary
examinations. The Examination Board is the body which determines in an objective and
professional manner whether a student has achieved the conditions set out by the Education
and Examination Regulations in regard to their knowledge, insight and skills required for
obtaining a degree.
Other matters
In case you have complaints and/or questions regarding other matters (discrimination,
discourteous treatment, stalking etc.) you can get in touch with the counsellor
If a student would like to follow additional classes, on top of the required 90 ECs, he/she
is required to register for those courses to include those courses in the official list of
16 program units that is submitted to the exam committee. Students who fail to do so will not
have the grades of extra courses on their final diploma.
The diploma ceremony for the Masters degree take place once per year in February.
The exact date of the diploma ceremony will be communicated by mail.
After being awarded with the diploma you are entitled to the degree Master of Science
and to use the abbreviation MSc after your family name: A.B. Familyname MSc.
6. Organizational structure of the Master
programme
Teaching takes place in various locations. Small-group courses are mainly taught in our
building of the Energy Academy Europe or at EnTranCe.
6.4. Committees
Study Pogramme Committee (SPC)
This committee exists of one staff and one student member of each of the three master
programmes. The committee advises on matters pertaining to the Teaching and
Examination Regulations, the programme, quality control and course evaluations.
Students can contact the Educational Committee via email to the student representative.
Chair: Ms. M. de Rooij (m.de.rooij@pl.hanze.nl)
A student can personally submit a written (by e-mail, EIE@org.hanze.nl) request to make
special arrangements. The Examination Board assesses whether a request is honored or
not.
18 Incomplete requests, or requests that are not submitted using the request/complaint-
form, will not be processed.
