Foreword
International agreements on CO2 reduction and European directives on the expansion of
renewable energy generation ensure that the rapid growth in renewable energy installations
will continue. Skills shortages in this sector are already being identified and the expected
growth will only exacerbate the situation. Within the rapidly expanding European renewable
energy industry, an urgent demand exists for more post-graduate trained staff, specialized in
renewable energy technology. EUREC Agency together with leading European Universities
involved in renewable energy education and training have responded to this demand through
the development of the European Master in Renewable Energy.

Five core universities and six specialisation universities across Europe, each one with
demonstrated experience in teaching and research excellence in a particular renewable
energy, have joined forces to create a unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of
their collective expertise and international networks.

I am very glad you chose Hanze UAS to be your core provider of the European Master in
Renewable Energy. On behalf of our staff I wish you a successful study and a very pleasant
stay in the beautiful city of Groningen.

2. The MSc in Renewable Energy in Groningen

Welcome
to the Master of Science in Renewable Energy programme in Groningen. One of Europes
biggest challenges is designing the transition towards a sustainable energy system
based on renewable energy. Energy scarcity and environmental problems are major
challenges. There is a need for highly skilled professionals with fundamental
interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and tools to tackle these challenges and find new
solutions. The combination of technical, strategic, social and environmental issues
encountered in the energy transition represents a significant multidisciplinary approach. It
requires more senior technical professionals and highly educated engineers who can
work with experts from other disciplines and carry out applied scientific research to come
up with practical solutions, by doing applied research, consultancy work or providing
strategy and policy advice. Completing the European Master in Renewable Energy
gives you a technical and systems perspective of energy transition challenges with a
focus on renewables. You will be able to design, test, and implement new technologies
with a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, making you essential to the whole energy
industry. In addition to this, the programme has a clear international focus, not only
because of the international student mix, but also because you are expected to follow
part of the programme at a second university in Europe. Gaining experience through real
life business cases and projects is another important characteristic of the programme.
This study guide provides you with the necessary information about the aims and structure of
the English Masters degree programme.
8
The most important legal rules that apply to this programme can be found in the following
documents:
Student Charter (https://www.hanze.nl/eng/study-at-hanze/education-in-the-
netherlands/legal-matters)
Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER)
Code of conduct (https://www.hanze.nl/eng/study-at-hanze/education-in-the-
netherlands/legal-matters)

All students who enrolled in the EMRE programme in Groningen are expected to be
familiar with these rules. If unclear or inconsistent information is provided, even in this
catalogue, then the formal rules always have priority.

2.1. Aim of the Programme

The EMRE programme is offered by five core Universities of the EUREC consortium: Hanze
UAS Groningen (the Netherlands), MINES-Paristech (France), Loughborough University
(UK), Oldenburg University (Germany) and the University of Zaragoza (Spain).
The specialisation semester is carried out by six Universities: National Technical University
of Athens (Greece), University of Northumbria (UK), University of Zaragoza (Spain),
University of Perpignan (France), Instituto Superior Tecnico (Portugal) and Hanze UAS (the
Netherlands). Each one is an internationally recognized university with strong reputations
and with demonstrated experience in teaching and research excellence in a particular
renewable energy technology.

The programme is divided into three semesters. During the core semester, you acquire a
solid foundation in the technical and engineering aspects related to innovative energy system
design and implementation and their various related interdisciplinary aspects. Theoretical
courses which also examine the socioeconomic issues surrounding the deployment of these
technologies are supported by laboratory workshops.

In the second semester you specialise in a chosen technology at a different university.

Hanze UAS offers the specialisation semester in Sustainable Fuel Systems for Mobility.

In the third semester, you apply your new knowledge and skills by means of a dissertation
which involves a research project at a company or a research center. The EUREC
consortium has a wide network of companies in the renewable energy industry where EMRE
students can do their research project. Students are also encouraged to find themselves a
company or research center for doing the research project. At the end of the masters
programme, you will present your final dissertation results to an assessment committee,
during the presentation days in Brussels.

2.2. Aim of the Study Guide

This Study guide provides an overview of the EMRE Master programme. Details of
amendments, should they be made, will be sent to the students Hanze UAS e-mail address

The Energy Transition Centre (EnTranCe) of Hanze UAS and the EAE is the
hotspot of applied sciences for businesses and innovations. It has the facilities,
technologies and the best possible network to develop plans into the energy
products and services the energy market demands. At EnTranCe, students have
the opportunity to work on innovations in the energy sector together with private
sector experts. Students can learn from participating companies, other
researchers and fellow students. Students gain research experience, while
simultaneously working on their professional network. The best thing about

each other.
