Abnormal Combustion Due To Malfunction of Suction Valve of Main Engine Fuel Injection Pump

The ship experienced an abnormal combustion issue due to a malfunctioning suction valve in the main engine's fuel injection pump. The exhaust gas temperature dropped in cylinder 7, so the engine was stopped and inspection found issues with the fuel injection valves and pump. When restarting, the same problem recurred. Further inspection revealed excessive wear in the thrust piece valve seat of the suction valve. Measurement showed the stroke exceeded the limit of 8mm. The cause was wear of the hardened layer in the long-used suction valve, allowing the slide valve to bury deeper and increase stroke. To prevent recurrence, the document recommends periodic maintenance and stroke measurement of suction valves, replacing them if the limit is exceeded.

Abnormal Combustion due to Malfunction of Suction Valve of
Main Engine Fuel Injection Pump
Technical Committee
Type of ship Container ship
Date of completion March 1990
Navigation route China Australia
Damaged machinery
Category Main engine
Name Fuel injection pump
Type 8K90MC
Maker MITSUI B&W
Date of trouble September 21, 2010

1. Outline of breakdown
While the ship was sailing for Australia, the exhaust gas temperature deviation alarm occurred to the No.7
cylinder of the main engine. As the exhaust gas temperature of the No.7 cylinder was lower than that of the
other cylinders, the crew members concluded that the amount of fuel oil injected into the cylinder was
insufficient, and then the main engine was stopped. After that, the fuel oil system was inspected. As a
result of the inspection, fuel injection valves, and the plunger, the barrel and the puncture valve of the fuel
injection pump were replaced by spare parts respectively. Although the operation of the main engine was
resumed, the exhaust gas temperature deviation alarm occurred again in the course of increasing the main
engine speed. Therefore, the main engine was stopped and the fuel oil system was inspected again. As a
result of further inspection, the crew members concluded that the reason for the alarm was a malfunction of
the suction valve of the fuel injection pump, the suction valve was replaced by a spare part and then it was
restored to normal condition.

2. Cause of trouble
The cause of the trouble was that wear of the valve seat of the thrust piece, which is inside the suction
valve, exceeded the operating limit. As it is possible to judge the operating limit of the suction valve by
means of measuring its stroke, the stroke was measured. The measurement revealed that although the
stroke limit of the concerned suction valve is 8.0 mm, wear-down of the suction valve, where the
malfunction occurred, exceeded its value.
The suction valve is that the slide valve, which is inside the suction valve, follows suction stroke and
compression stroke and is opened and closed automatically in structure. When the valve seat of the thrust
piece wears and its hardened layer disappears due to long-term employment of the suction valve, the slide
valve buries itself gradually in the valve seat surface. Moreover, when buried depth of the slide valve
increases, the stroke of the slide valve also increases and the malfunction of the suction valve is caused.

3. Repair Countermeasure
Periodical maintenance of the suction valve should be surely carried out.
Measurement of the stroke should be carried out by matching the periodical maintenance and it's
readings should be recorded.
When the suction valve exceeds its operating limit, the inferior suction valve should be replaced by a
new suction valve assembly according to the maker's recommendation.
