Answer All The Questions. Total Marks: 50. Total Time Allotted: 60 Mins. Make Any Suitable Assumptions If Required and State The Assumptions Clearly

This document is the midterm exam for a 5th semester Civil Engineering course on Structural Analysis. It consists of 6 questions worth a total of 50 marks over 60 minutes. Question 1 asks students to draw bending moment diagrams for different beam cases. Question 2 asks students to determine whether given structures are determinate or indeterminate and their degree of indeterminacy. Question 3 provides a beam-column problem and asks students to calculate deflection, stress, and other values. Question 4 asks students to develop a stiffness matrix for degrees of freedom shown. Question 5 asks students to develop flexibility and stiffness matrices for a beam and check that their product equals the identity matrix. Question 6 uses Macaulay's method to find slope and deflection

Midterm Exam 1

Class: Civil Engineering, 5th semester

CE 309 - Structural Analysis

Answer all the questions. Total marks: 50. Total time allotted: 60 mins. Make any suitable
assumptions if required and state the assumptions clearly.

Q1) Draw the bending moment diagrams for the following cases. (5 marks)

i)

ii)

Q2) Find whether the following structures are determinate or indeterminate. Also find the degree of
indeterminacy. ( 2 marks)

i) ii)

Q3) A corner portion of an residential is shown in the figure below. An edge column AB rests on the
free end of cantilever beam CB. From the load analysis of the building model, it was found that the
column transfers a vertical downward load of 100 kN along with a bending moment (about Z axis) of
50 kN-m in clockwise direction. As an engineer, you were asked to analyse the beam CB to evaluate
the deflection of the beam at end B and at mid span of beam CB. Also, find the flexural stress at top
fiber at the end C by assuming elastic behaviour. Assume joint B is free and joint C is rigid. Beam CB
is of rectangular cross section of B x D : 200 mm x 300 mm, Elastic modulus E = 30000 MPa. (Hint:
use = / to evaluate flexural stress.) (8 marks)
Q4) Develop the stiffness matrix for the shown Dofs in the following beam. The Elastic modulus of
beam is E, cross sectional area is A and sectional moment of inertia is I. (10 marks)

Q5) For the beam shown below develop the flexibility matrix [f] and stiffness matrix [k]
independently. Check whether the product [f]*[k] = [I]. (15 marks)

Q6) Using Macaulays method, find the slope at point B and deflection at point C in the beam shown
below. The beam is of rectangular cross section of B x D : 200 mm x 300 mm, Elastic modulus E =
30000 MPa. (10 marks)
