Through the conference held in Lifelong Learning Institute, I have learnt about
several eye-opening perspectives that have never crossed my mind. I have gained a few
know-hows that can be used to make teaching and learning more fun than ever. Thus, I
am here to share a few words of wisdom from the two great teachers I encountered in this
educational conference.
From the keynote speaker from China, Dr. Chen Hong Pin, he has provided us a
framework of learning and teaching goals. As mentioned by Dr. Chen, a sound education
can only be achieved when the students possessed the right attitude towards learning itself.
Through the window of attitude, three other treasures of learning which are knowledge,
cultural values and skills can be acquired.
There are a few bold statements made by Dr. Chen that has caught my attention.
These includes the essential qualities of a fun and effective teacher. As an effective teacher,
one should always be able to teach within the time frame provided by the school. He
quoted that ineffective teacher always borrow time or extend learning hours due to unclear
objectives set before entering a lesson. A fun teacher is said to have the ability to make
students eager to learn and stay focus during the lesson. He recommended teachers to make
light jokes and find small things which create plenty of smiles or laughter amongst students.
The keynote speaker from Taiwan, Miss Nah, a Chemistry teacher like myself
emphasizes on scientific thinking. She has shown plenty of evidences that assessments are
varied and exist in many forms and advices teacher to avoid sticking only to the
conventional written assessment. She strongly encouraged teachers to incorporate
collaborative learning in classroom lesson to stimulate construction of higher order
thinking skills. Besides, she stated that communication is a strong learning tool to spark
exchange of knowledge through discussion. Teachers should ask probing questions to
stimulate thinking and discussion at the same time, avoid giving answers as part and parcel
of teaching and learning.
I have two fruitful sessions with the two mentors and I cannot wait to put the
acquired knowledge into practice in my classroom teaching. It was a weekend well-spent.
