Lesson Five-Famous Landmarks

This lesson plan focuses on teaching students about famous landmarks along the Oregon Trail. The objectives are for students to identify at least one landmark on the trail, its location, and a fact about it. As an introduction, students will discuss what landmarks are and whether landmarks along the trail would be natural or man-made. Students will then work in pairs to research a landmark using computers and answer questions on a worksheet, drawing the landmark. Groups will then share what they learned about their assigned landmark before cleaning up.

Motivation
(Opening/
Introduction/ Today we are learning about famous landmarks on the trail.
Engagement) What is a landmark?
Do you think the land marks along the trail will mostly be God-made landmarks or man made landmarks?
Remember- these are some of the first overlanders travelling west!

Development Give each student a slip of paper with part of the landmark story on it.
Go around the circle and have each student read their part in order.
Show students pictures of some of the landmarks.

Were many of them man made or God made?

Why do you think so?

Which would be your favorite landmark to come across if you were in a prairie schooner headed out
west? Why?

Now I am going to put you into pairs. You will get a worksheet and a landmark. I want you to use your
computers to help you answer the questions on this worksheet. I need to see everyone working, not just
one partner so I want to see both of your handwriting on the worksheet. Then, you need to draw a
picture using colored pencils of what your landmark looks like. You may work wherever you like.

Questions? Go!

Walk around to partners of students and see how they are working. If groups finish early, have them look
up what the area around the landmark is like or what the state is like.

Closure Alright pause! We need to put our computers away and clean up. Before we do that I want each group to
say their landmark and share something they learned about their landmark. When everyone is done you
may put your computers away and hand me your worksheet.
