Dear Congressman/Senator ___________________:

As a constituent of yours, I am writing today in the hopes to urge you to vote Yes to the
Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act. This important legislation will not only
provide workers with economic security, serve to be more inclusive with its coverage, but also
will help to create a self-sustaining insurance fund. If this Act were to be passed, America as a
whole will finally be able to have paid leave, something only 12% of American citizens had
qualified for before. Not only that, America can finally join the other 41 developed countries
with paid leave.

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allowed certain employees to have 12 weeks of
unpaid leave, but it has been shown that it is ineffective for many families. Many families do not
even use the full 12 weeks as it is simply not feasible for dual working families. A husband or a
wifes salary is crucial at times, and the unpaid leave helps very little.

Passing this legislation will bring many benefits, possibly lowering employee turnover rate and
unemployment. If mothers and fathers were able to take leaves when necessarily, they would
continue to work rather than quit out of necessity. It will greatly improve health for not only
mothers and their newborns, but also for any employee who is in need of medical leave.
Caretaking will no longer be an issue for women only, as husbands and wives can take turns if an
dire issue were to come up.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you support the FAMILY Act to make
America a better country with its citizens economic security, health benefits and steady
employment in mind.
