ECG353 - Question & Rubric Assignment 2

The document provides instructions for Assignment 2 of the soil engineering course ECG 353. Students are required to analyze subsurface exploration data from a site investigation report. They must develop a soil profile, interpret engineering properties, and propose a suitable foundation for the project based on the soil conditions. The assignment involves forming a team, finding an existing site investigation report, interpreting raw data to characterize the subsurface conditions, and submitting a technical report by December 22nd with sections on introduction, methodology, data interpretation, discussions, and conclusions.

SEMESTER :

ECG 353 SOIL ENGINEERING

SEPT-JAN 2018

ASSIGNMENT 2
INSTRUCTION SHEETS

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this task, student must be able to:
1. Analyses data from site investigation (SI) report to develop soil profile. (CO1 PO1)
2. Propose suitable type of foundation for the site from the SI data. (CO1 PO1)

OVERVIEW
The site investigation report is a tool used to communicate the site conditions, and design and
construction recommendations. The information contained in this report is often referred during design
and construction and frequently after completion of the project.

TASK
1. Form a team of not more than five (5) persons.
2. The team must :
a. Find an existing site investigation data/report (from any insitu testing, such as from JKR
Probe, Mackintosh, SPT and/or CPT Test).
b. Interpret the raw data and correlate to engineering properties (such as shear strength, soil
pressure, bearing capacity, relative density or compressive strength etc) and also plot the 2D
soil profile (refer APPENDIX 1).
c. Finally students need to propose suitable foundation for that particular project based on
the result stated in the report.
d. Students need to compile their finding in a mini report and they may refer to any
reading materials to aid, clarify and improve on the report.

Guideline for report writing:

a. Introduction or overview of the project (Explanation about SI, specific method of SI test etc)
b. summary of the SI reports:
- Description of the field tests as carried out
- Soil exploration methods
- Parameters used in design the geotechnical structures for the project
c. 2D Vertical soil profiles drawing & bearing capacity graph (printed and submit with the report)
d. Proposal of suitable foundation for the proposed project.
e. Discussions, conclusions, references.
f. All figures, tables and photo extracted and used in the report must be fully mentioned in the text
and properly numbered and acknowledged.

SUBMISSION DATE : 22 DECEMBER 2017 (before 5.00 pm)
