Learning From HMG Training On Switchgear

The document summarizes information from three training sessions on switchgear: 1) It provides the recommended megger and PI test values for low and high voltage motors, with minimum acceptance levels. 2) It lists the typical contact resistance ranges for various voltage circuit breakers up to 735kV. 3) It specifically calls out the contact resistance values followed at an AREVA factory for 6.6kV vacuum circuit breakers of different amperages. 4) It concludes by stating the contact resistance values of 6.6kV circuit breakers used at MSG(E) which are deemed adequate.

Learning from HMG Training on Switchgear

(Kolkata, 13-14th. Dec.’13, attended by UK Basu & M Praveen)

1) Megger values :
For LT motors : Use 500-V megger For 6.6-kV motors : Use 2.5-kV megger.
Megger for 1 minute.
Minimum acceptance values :
LT motors : At least 2 MΩ.
HT motors : [(2 x kV) + 2 ] MΩ. For 6.6-kV motors,
Example : For 6.6-kV winding, (2x6.6) + 2 = 15 MΩ.

2) PI Test :
For LT motors : Use 500-V megger For 6.6-kV motors : Use 2.5-kV megger.
10 minute / 1 minute PI values : 4 is excellent (expected of new motors)
2-3 is good
2 is satisfactory
Less than 2 is poor (generally for old motors)
Above values are for HT motors. For LT motors,
> 2 is satisfactory
1-2 is acceptable
< 1 not acceptable
3) CR Values of Circuit Breakers :
Upto 25-kV Breaker : 100 to 350 µΩ
120-kV : 80 to 200 µΩ
120-kV to 330-kV : 100 µΩ
735-kV : 20 to 80 µΩ
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Learning from AREVA Factory (As they follow at the factory)
(Kolkata, 2012, attended by UK Basu)
1) CR Values of 6.6-kV VCBs
400 to 800 A VCB : 51 µΩ
1000-1250 A : 44 µΩ
1600 A : 35 µΩ
2000 A : 32 µΩ
2500-3150 A : 28 µΩ
2) Allowable leakage current : Referring to the figure,
the leakage current should be < 10 mA.
3.3-kV VCB : 10 kV
6.6-kV VCB : 20 kV Apply
11-kV VCB : 28 kV
voltage
Apply voltage for 1 minute, & PT to be kept disconnected
during test.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Circuit Breaker CR Values we follow at MSG(E)
6.6-kV SF6 / VCB / MOCB : Upto 100 µΩ
6.6-kV VCU : Upto 300 µΩ
A comparison shows our practice adequate.
