Why PHST 1

This document outlines a PHST capstone class discussion on what PHST is as a field of study. Students will discuss in groups readings on the evolution of PHST and how it has been defined. They will then write a paper on what PHST is and why it should be studied. The class will have a jigsaw discussion where each group reports on a reading and how it relates to defining PHST and the value of studying it. The goal is for students to understand how the field has developed and how it applies to their interests in philanthropy.

PHST 490 Capstone- Spring 2018

SUBJECT TEACHER GRADE DATE

What is PHST? Tyrone Freeman Senior PHST majors January 22, 2018

OVERVIEW (TEACHING ASSISTANT FACILITATION)

The readings are in Canvas (Curti, Hall, Payton, & Turner). They represent some thinkers who helped
shaped the field as we know it. I am also asking students to select one text that is most influential upon
their own thinking about what PHST is, which I think should be interesting. I've allotted 40 minutes for
the discussion. The goal is to have them draw out key ideas about how PHST has evolved as a field so
they can then write a paper entitled, "What is PHST? Why Study it?"

10:50 am -11:30 am (40 mins)
