The controversial issue of whether to bring back capital punishment is 1. currently/
presently in the news again. I 2. wander / wonder what your 3. attitude /
opinion to the idea of restoring the death 4. penalty / sentence is? Personally,
I’m in two minds; on the one hand, it can be 5. argued / discussed that it acts as

who should 10. die / dye, would you be prepared to carry out such a sentence?
This surely hypocritical to 11. maintain / support such measures unless you
would be willing to carry out the sentence yourself. In the United Kingdom criminals
convicted of murder used to be 12. hanged / hung, whereas in the States they use
the 13. electric / electrical chair. Nowadays, both of these seem barbaric. Some

sensitive course of 5. action / activity is to give it up. What surprises me is the
hypocritical attitude that some people 6. adapt / adopt towards the problem. It’s
quite common, for example, to come across converts to vegetarianism who 7. insist
/ persist in smoking like chimneys. A similar example is the chain-smoking
teetotaller. I’ve tried to 8. brake / break the habit on a number of 9. events /
occasions but unfortunately all my efforts so far have been in 10. vain / vein
