Lesson Plan in Mathematics 11

The lesson plan is for a grade 11 mathematics class on limits. The objective is for students to determine if two-sided limits exist or do not exist using left- and right-hand limits with at least 75% proficiency. As an example to review the concept of limits, the teacher will have students calculate the limit of the function f(x) = x3 - x2 / x-1 as x approaches 1 by examining its values in a table. The limit is equal to 1 because as values of x get closer to 1 from both sides, the corresponding function values approximate to 1.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 11

MARK JEROME N. DE LA PEÑA CYRENE CASPE

I. OBJECTIVE
Given several exercises, the grade 11 students are expected to determine if the two-sided
limit exist and does not exist using the left- and right-hand limit with at least 75% proficiency
level.

A. Review
Good morning every one.
What was our discussion last meeting? About definition of limits.
That’s right!
And, what do we mean by limit of a
function?
Correct.
Based on our discussion, how do we get
limit of a function? X f(x) x f(x)
Very good! 1.5 2.25 0.5 0.25
Suppose, I have a function 1.1 1.21 0.9 0.81
𝑥 3 −𝑥 2 1.01 1.0201 0.99 0.9801
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥−1 , how are we going to get its
1.001 1.002001 0.999 0.998001
limit? 1.0001 1.00020001 0.9999 0.99980001
Correct, we will use at this time first 1.00001 1.0000200001 0.99999 0.9999800001
the table of values.
Now, I want you to get the limit of this lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 1
𝑥→1
function?
Very good!
Based on the table, why is the limit equal Because, as we substitute values of x closer to 1both
to 1? from its right side and left side, it seems that the value
Correct! of the function is equal to 1.
So, we observe that in getting the limit of
this function, from the left side of 1 and from the
right side of 1, they have the same approximate
value of f(x) which is the limit.

We found the limit of the function and it is

equal to 1.
I will start my discussion by reviewing the concept or definition of limit, specifically
lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝐿.
𝑥→𝑎

“In taking the limit of a function as the independent variable approaches a certain number,
we only observe the behavior of the function values as the independent variable comes closer
(closer only, not exactly) to the number and what will happen to the actual value is not a concern.”
As part of the review, I will provide an example of getting the limit of a function shown in a
table of values.
𝑥3 − 𝑥2
𝑓(𝑥) =
𝑥−1
x f(x) x f(x)
1.5 2.25 0.5 0.25
1.1 1.21 0.9 0.81
1.01 1.0201 0.99 0.9801
1.001 1.002001 0.999 0.998001
1.0001 1.00020001 0.9999 0.99980001
1.00001 1.0000200001 0.99999 0.9999800001

lim 𝑓(𝑥) = 1
𝑥→1

The purpose of the review is to highlight the premise in the first implication that the limit
exists and is equal to 1. Then, details in its existence with respect to the left and right hand side
limit will be emphasized in the lesson proper.
