Lecture 17a Earthwork Estimation

This document discusses three views used in construction contracts to show earthwork features: plan view, profile view, and cross section. It also describes two methods for calculating earthwork volumes: (1) the trench excavation method which uses cross-sectional area and trench length, and (2) the average end area method which calculates volume as the average of two end areas multiplied by the length between them. An example of calculating volume using the average end method with three cross sections is provided.

• Cross Sectional Methods

• Trench Excavations
• Average End Method
• Plan Area Methods
• Four Corner Method

Construction Methodology Cross Section Design

Trench Excavations
• Volume = Cross Sectional Area x Length of Trench
• EXAMPLE: Find the volume (bank measure) of
excavation required for a trench 0.92m (3 ft) wide, 1.8m (6
ft) deep, and 152m (500 ft) long. Assume that the trench
sides will be approximately vertical
