THE LAUNCH OF SINGAPORE’S FIRST INCLUSIVE ORCHESTRA!

CELEBRATING ABILITIES. PROMOTING INCLUSION. SERVING TOGETHER.

83 Singaporeans aged 4 to 58, with and without special needs, come together for the
first time as an orchestra to celebrate abilities and promote inclusion. That – is the magic of
The Purple Symphony, a heart-warming initiative facilitated by Central Singapore
Community Development Council (CDC) that aims to promote inclusion in Singapore through
music.

2 The Purple Symphony is Singapore’s first inclusive orchestra comprising musicians

with and without special needs, gathering to serve the community as one through their musical
abilities. The orchestra’s musicians play a range of Asian and Western instruments in five key
musical sections: Chinese Orchestra, Strings, Chinese Winds, Percussion, and a special Choir.

3 Key highlights and components of The Purple Symphony include:

 A heart-warming 17-member choir comprising children with hearing and visual

impairment from Lighthouse School. The choir will be joining the orchestra to sing
You Raise Me Up as part of The Purple Medley;
 A special percussion section comprising students from Pathlight School with mild to
moderate autism, as well as members from the Movement for the Intellectually
Disabled of Singapore (MINDS);
 Talented erhu player, Ms Stephanie Ow, who has performed at many public venues
despite her visual impairment;
 Skilled percussionist, Ms Lily Goh, who has mastered the concert marimba in spite
of her hearing impairment;
 Physically-disabled residents from Singapore Cheshire Home, Ms Doris Lee and Ms
Huang Lizhen, both well-versed in the piano and violin respectively;
 Local violin ensemble The Little Heartstrings, comprising children and youths;
 Members from Singapore Management University’s Chinese Orchestra;
 8 professional musicians from Ding Yi Music Company, a local Chinese chamber
music ensemble.

4 Said Mayor of Central Singapore District Ms Denise Phua: “Celebrating the abilities
and supporting the inclusion of special needs individuals is a cause that Central Singapore CDC
actively promotes. The Purple Symphony creates an opportunity for inclusion of people who
are different, through music. It demonstrates the grit and abilities of our friends from the
special needs community and provides individuals with an opportunity to be significant and to
contribute through their music. I am extremely proud of our pioneer orchestra and I know that
everyone will be touched by their music.”

5 Led by Artistic Director Mr Quek Ling Kiong, the orchestra debuts today with a
repertoire of five songs, including a special medley arranged by Composer Ms Leong Kit Yeng
to celebrate the multiracial diversity of our nation – a gift for our nation’s 50th birthday. The
repertoire includes A Man with Determination (男儿当自强) – a famous theme song from the
Hong Kong movie series Once Upon a Time in China; as well as The Purple Medley –
comprising four songs: Chan Mali Chan, Munnaeru Vaalibaa, The Moon Represents My Heart,
and You Raise Me Up.

6 Moving forward, there are plans for the inclusive orchestra to perform at a number of
public platforms, including The Purple Parade in October, as well as the ASEAN Paralympic
Games in December.
