Prior to commencement of NDT activities.

4.0 DATUM AND REFERENCE SYSTEM

• An overview of the inspection area to be provided in the form of photographs and plant drawings.
This would be provided by the customer before inspection commences.

• In the interest of reproducibility, the datum and reference system for defining inspection segments shall
be relative to the product. The reference system shall be linked to natural reference positions E.g. Weld

5.0 METHOD

Following are the three essential steps to be followed when practicing this method:

• Magnetization of part.

• Application of wet particles while the part is magnetized.

• Observation, interpretation and evaluation of particle accumulation under suitable light.

6.0 MAGNETIZATION

Continuous Magnetization method shall be used,

A/C Electro-Magnetic yoke shall be used with wet non-fluorescent particles. Each area will be examined
at least twice, with the lines of flux during one examination approximately perpendicular to the line of
flux during the other.

7.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

• Surface preparation by grinding may be necessary in some cases where surfaces irregularities would
otherwise mask the indication of discontinuities.

• The surface to be examined and all adjacent areas within at least 25mm shall be dry and free of all dirt ,
grease , lint, scale welding flux and spatter , oil or other extraneous matter that could interfere with the
examination.
• The surface temperature of the part being examined shall not exceed temperature range limitations set
by manufacture of the particles.

9.0 EXAMINATION TEMPERATURE

The examination shall be conducted between 10˚C to 50˚C or as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

10.0 YOKE TECHNIQUE

I. APPLICATION

This method can only be applied to detect surface or near surface discontinuities.

II. MAGNETIZATION CURRENT

Alternating current Electro Magnetic Yoke shall be used to magnetize the part.

III. YOKE SET CALIBRATION

• A/C Electromagnetic yoke shall have a lifting power of at least 10 lbs (4.5 kg) and at the maximum
pole spacing. The 4.5kg Magnetic weight lift test bar should have the actual weight stamped on each
bar and certificated and traceable to recognized standard.
• The frequency of Lifting power calibration shall not exceed one year. The calibration record shall be
maintained and produced to client whenever required.
• Each magnet shall be identified by a serial number, calibration of the equipment will be carried out on
a daily basis and results recorded documented on a daily log.

IV. DETERMINE FIELD DIRECTION

• Pie gauge (Fig 2) or Flexible laminated strips (Castrol Strips, Fig 1) shall be used to determine the
direction of external magnetic field.
• For field strength assessment, a field indicator or Burmah Castrol flux indicator with a thin layer of
white contrast lacquer adhered on surface shall be used. The field strength is indicated when a clearly

defined line of magnetic particles form the across the copper face of the indicator and when the
magnetic particles are applied simultaneously with the magnetizing force. When a clearly defined line
of particles is not formed in the desired direction, the magnetizing technique shall be changed or
adjusted accordingly to increase the field strength.
• If No indication are visible in either pie gage or strips when the field is applied perpendicular to the
slots, then the field is not strong enough to generate indications.

Particle indications are Strongest when applied

magnetic field (H) is of sufficient strength and
perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the strip.
No indications will form when the longitudinal axis is
parallel to the applied field or the strength of H is
insufficient.

Figure 2

11.0 METHOD OF EXAMINATION

• Examination shall be done by the wet continuous method, which is when the magnetizing current
remains on whilst the testing medium is being applied and while the excess of the testing medium is
being removed.
• Magnetizing Technique:
o AC yoke shall be used to produce the longitudinal magnetic field in the part.
o Maximum sensitivity will be to linear discontinuities oriented perpendicular to the lines of flux.

oAll tested areas shall be magnetized at least twice, for the second test the magnetic field shall be
orientated approximately perpendicular to the first test.
o The magnetized area shall be considered to be not larger than a circle described through the
contact points with a pole spacing of maximum 150mm
o All examinations shall be conducted with sufficient area overlap to assure 100% coverage at the
correct sensitivity.
• Application of Detecting Medium
o The wet detecting medium shall normally be applied by spraying over the surface.
o The detecting medium shall be applied immediately prior to and during the application of
magnetic field. The application is completed before the magnetization is terminated.
o Inspection shall commence immediately the detecting medium has been applied and shall
continue during and for a short time after the application of the magnetic field.
o All tested areas shall be examined in a minimum of two mutually perpendicular directions.
When an indication is found, a third application should be made at an axis where maximum
indication can be obtained
• Light meters shall be calibrated every six months or whenever a meter has been repaired.
• Minimum time delay between welding and NDE inspection is 48 hours.

12.0 EVALUATION OF INDICATIONS

• Linear Indications are those in which the length is more than 3 (three) times the width. Only
indications with a dimension greater than 1.6 mm shall be considered as relevant.

• Rounded indications, which are circular, elliptical or in any other shapes, with or without tail the
length equal to or less than three times the width.

• Localized surface imperfections, which may occur from machining marks, surface conditions, or
incomplete bond between base metal and cladding, may produce similar indications, which are
non-relevant to the detection of unacceptable

13.0 INTERPRETATION

The examination shall be performed using visible light source as given below:

• Interpretation shall be done under minimum white light intensity of 100fc (1000 Lux)

• A visible light source (bulb) of minimum 100watts power shall be used at a distance not more than 14
inches distance from the examination surface.

• One time demonstration of light level verification shall be done using a calibrated white light meter.
The light intensity, Light source and technique used shall be documented and maintained on file.

• All indications shall be classified and interpreted as

i. Relevant indications
ii. Non-Relevant indications
iii. False indications

• All valid indications form by magnetic particle examination is the result of magnetic flux leakage fields.

Indication may be relevant or Non relevant

• Indications caused by particles being held by non-magnetic force considered as being false indications,
examples include particles lying in the depression at the side of a weld, or particles attracted to the scale
on the surface.
• Relevant indications are produced by flux leakage fields which are the results of discontinuities that
may or may not be acceptable and shall be evaluated with regards to the acceptance standard.
• Non relevant indications can occur as single or in a pattern as a result of flux leakage fields created by
conditions such as changes in section, inherent properties, etc., or may be associated with a
discontinuity, which is not considered detrimental to the part.

14.0 EVALUATION AND ACCEPTANCE STANDARD (AWS D1.1/D1.1-Ed 2015)
