Fall 2017 - MTH603 - 1 - SOL

This document contains solutions to two questions regarding numerical methods for approximating roots. Question 1 uses Newton's method to find the root of f(x) = 3x - cos(x) - 1 between 0 and 1. The initial approximation is taken to be 0.5. After two iterations, the root is approximated as 0.6071. Question 2 uses the regula falsi method to find the root of f(x) = x - e^-x between 0 and 1. By examining the graph, the interval is taken to be 0 to 1. After four iterations, the root is approximated as 0.5672.

Question: 1 Marks: 10

Using Newton-Raphson method approximates the root of the following equation in the interval  0 , 1
up to the three decimal places.
f  x   3 x  cos x  1
Note: All the calculations should be in radian.

Solution:
Since the root of lies between 0 and 1.

Also,

We shall take the initial approximation then the Newton’s iteration formula is

If , the first approximation is given by

If ,

Since the two consecutive iterations are agreed with each other up to 4 decimal places, so the required
root is 0.6071. 1

Question: 2 Marks: 10

Using Regula Falsi method approximates the root of the following equation upto four decimal places.
f  x  x  e  x
Note: The following graph of above equation can be very helpful in finding the interval of the root. So,
I am not mentioning the interval there as mentioned above. So, try to find the appropriate interval then
apply the method. Otherwise, the convergence would be very slow.

Solution:
Since
From the above figure it is clear that the root lies between 0 and 1.

Let
Using the method of false position

So root lies between 0 and 0.61271

So root lies between 0 and 0.57212

So root lies between 0 and 0.5677

So root lies between 0 and 0.567205

Since the two consecutive iterations are agreed with each other up to 4 decimal places, so the required
root is 0.5672.
