Heat Trans 46

A 2-inch steel pipe contains saturated steam at 121.1°C and is insulated with 25.4 mm of asbestos. The insulation outer surface is at 26.7°C. The document calculates the heat loss over 30.5 m of the pipe by determining the thermal resistances of the steel and insulation and using those values in the heat transfer equation. The calculated heat loss is 5389.3478 W.

46. A steel pipe, 2 inches schedule 40 contains saturated steam at 121.1 ℃.

The line is insulated with

25.4 mm asbestos ( k=0.182 W/m-K). assuming that the inside surface temperature of the metal wall is
at 121.1 ℃ and the outer surface of the insulation is at 26.7 ℃ calculate the heat loss for 30.5 m of
pipe. Thermal conductivity of steel is 45 W/m-K.

Given:

L = 30.85 m r1 = 0.0263 m

K steel = 45 W/m-K r2 = .0302 m

K asbestos = 0.182 W/m-K r3 = .0556 m

Thickness of asbestos = 25.4 mm

ID = 2.067 in

OD = 2.375 in
