Immigration Mini Lesson

This document provides a lesson plan on teaching students about immigration as a real-world problem. The lesson introduces students to the concept of immigration, has them read a text on why people immigrated to America, discusses current perspectives on immigration as both a positive (e.g. filling jobs) and negative (e.g. taking jobs from citizens), and asks students to consider their own views on immigration and whether it should be allowed or restricted. The objective is for students to think critically about immigration as an issue affecting the Hispanic/Latino community.

DISCUSSION
Many people still immigrate to the United States like our family members
did a long time ago. Now that we know why immigration is a problem that
people do not agree on, let’s talk about some questions:
 What do you think about immigration?
 Do you agree or disagree with it?
 Should people still be able to immigrate to the U.S.? Why?
 What do you think is a solution to this problem?
CLOSING
We’ve learned so much about immigration today! I would like you to write
about your opinion about immigration. What do you think about
immigration? Do you agree with people immigrating to the U.S. or do you
disagree with people coming to the U.S.?
