The Functions of The Skeletal System: Dalire, Carlos V. Bs Psychology 3B

The skeletal system is composed of bones and cartilage that perform several critical functions for the human body. It supports the body, facilitates movement, protects internal organs, produces blood cells, and stores and releases minerals and fat. Common skeletal diseases worldwide include arthritis, bone cancer, leukemia, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis. In the Philippines, common skeletal diseases are arthritis, lordosis, scoliosis, leukemia, osteopenia, and fractures.

The Functions of the Skeletal System

Bone, or osseous tissue, is a hard, dense connective tissue that forms most of the adult
skeleton, the support structure of the body. In the areas of the skeleton where bones move (for
example, the ribcage and joints), cartilage, a semi-rigid form of connective tissue, provides
flexibility and smooth surfaces for movement. The skeletal system is the body system
composed of bones and cartilage and performs the following critical functions for the human
body:

 supports the body

 facilitates movement

 protects internal organs

 produces blood cells

 stores and releases minerals and fat

The common skeletal system diseases in the world
1. Arthritis
 Arthritis is an inflammatory condition. It affects the joints of the body such as the
knee joint and portions of the spinal column.
2. Bone cancer
 Bone cancer is a skeletal system disease that originates within a bone of the body
causing the bones to weaken
3. Leukemia
 Leukemia is also a form of cancer but this skeletal system disease originates in the
bone marrow and affects the lymphatic system resulting in the formation of abnormal
white blood cells.
4. Osteomalacia
 Osteomalacia is a disease that leads to the softening and weakening of the bone tissue
in the human body.
5. Osteoporosis
 Osteoporosis is a skeletal system disease in which bones become brittle and weak due
to extensive loss of bone tissue.
6. Spina Bifida
 Spina bifida is a genetic birth defect that effects the development of the spinal cord.
When present, this defect is typically detected and treated before a baby is born.
7. Kyphosis
 Abnormal rounding of the spine that occurs in the upper and middle part of the back.
8. Bone Tumor
 Abnormal growth of cells within the bone that may be noncancerous or cancerous.
9. Scoliosis
 Causes the spine to curve to the left or right side.
10. Fractures
 Fractures commonly occur when a person has fallen, an object has been dropped on
them, or the bone has been twisted

1. Arthritis
 Arthritis is an inflammatory condition. It affects the joints of the body such as the
knee joint and portions of the spinal column.
2. Lordosis
 Excessive inward curvature of the spine. an excessive lumbar curvature of the
vertebral column, which produces a swayback condition.
3. Scoliosis
 Causes the spine to curve to the left or right side.
4. Leukemia
 Leukemia is also a form of cancer but this skeletal system disease originates in the
bone marrow and affects the lymphatic system resulting in the formation of abnormal
white blood cells
5. Osteopenia
 Reduced bone mass of lesser severity than osteoporosis.

6. Fractures
 Fractures commonly occur when a person has fallen, an object has been dropped on
them, or the bone has been twisted
7. Bone Tumor
 Abnormal growth of cells within the bone that may be noncancerous or cancerous.
8. Bone cancer
 Bone cancer is a skeletal system disease that originates within a bone of the body
causing the bones to weaken
9. Segmental
 Only one piece is broken out of the bone.
10. Greenstick
 The break is only on one side of the bone, and the other side of the bone is bowed.
