Blotting Out of Sins
Blotting Out of Sins
1. In this lesson we will study the subject of the blotting out of sins.
2. What is the blotting out of sins? From which apartment of the heavenly sanctuary does the blotting out of sins occur?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“For eighteen centuries this work of ministration continued in the first apartment of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ, pleaded in behalf
of penitent believers, secured their pardon and acceptance with the Father, yet their sins still remained upon the books of record. As in the
typical service there was a work of atonement at the close of the year, so before Christ's work for the redemption of men is completed there is a
work of atonement for the removal of sin from the sanctuary. This is the service which began when the 2300 days ended. At that time, as
foretold by Daniel the prophet, our High Priest entered the most holy, to perform the last division of His solemn work--to cleanse the
sanctuary.
As anciently the sins of the people were by faith placed upon the sin offering and through its blood transferred, in figure, to the earthly
sanctuary, so in the new covenant the sins of the repentant are by faith placed upon Christ and transferred, in fact, to the heavenly sanctuary.
And as the typical cleansing of the earthly was accomplished by the removal of the sins by which it had been polluted, so the actual cleansing
of the heavenly is to be accomplished by the removal, or blotting out, of the sins which are there recorded. But before this can be
accomplished, there must be an examination of the books of record to determine who, through repentance of sin and faith in Christ, are
entitled to the benefits of His atonement. The cleansing of the sanctuary therefore involves a work of investigation--a work of judgment.
This work must be performed prior to the coming of Christ to redeem His people; for when He comes, His reward is with Him to give to every
man according to his works. Revelation 22:12. {GC 421.3}
Thus those who followed in the light of the prophetic word saw that, instead of coming to the earth at the termination of the 2300 days
in 1844, Christ then entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of atonement preparatory to His
coming. {GC 422.1}
3a. Note: To confirm the above points, meditate upon the following scriptures, which detail the operations of the earthly sanctuary, which is a
type of the work in the heavenly sanctuary. Discover the three steps in the plan of salvation and the getting rid of sins.
3b. Firstly, the repentant sinner brought his sin offering to the sanctuary inside the outer court, which is called the door of the tabernacle. See
Leviticus 4:1-4.
3c. Secondly, the priest took the blood of the sin offering into the holy place of the tabernacle and sprinkled the blood on the veil seven times.
See Leviticus 4:5-7.
3d. Lastly, on the Day of Atonement, the Day of Investigative Judgment, the high priest officiated in the most holy place, in order to cleanse the
sanctuary, to blot out sins. See Leviticus 16:7-22.
4. What must Jesus do for the people who shall be saved, just before He returns? Acts 3:19,20_____________________________________
6. What are the conditions that one must meet for Jesus to blot out his/her sins and carry that person to heaven?
Acts 3:19_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
7. If we do not repent of every sin and become converted, then our sins will not be blotted out. Unfortunately, what will Jesus blot out?
Psalm 69:27,28; Revelation 22:18,19____________________________________________________________________________________
8. Upon whom were the sins of the people that were cleansed and blotted out from the ancient sanctuary placed? Leviticus 16:8-10,20-22
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
9. Who does the scapegoat represent?__________________________________________________________________________________
“Now the event takes place foreshadowed in the last solemn service of the Day of Atonement. When the ministration in the holy of
holies had been completed, and the sins of Israel had been removed from the sanctuary by virtue of the blood of the sin offering, then the
scapegoat was presented alive before the Lord; and in the presence of the congregation the high priest confessed over him ‘all the iniquities of
the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat.’ Leviticus 16:21. In like manner, when
the work of atonement in the heavenly sanctuary has been completed, then in the presence of God and heavenly angels and the hosts of the
redeemed the sins of God's people will be placed upon Satan; he will be declared guilty of all the evil which he has caused them to commit.
And as the scapegoat was sent away into a land not inhabited, so Satan will be banished to the desolate earth, an uninhabited and
dreary wilderness. {GC 658.1}
“It was seen, also, that while the sin offering pointed to Christ as a sacrifice, and the high priest represented Christ as a mediator, the
scapegoat typified Satan, the author of sin, upon whom the sins of the truly penitent will finally be placed. When the high priest, by
virtue of the blood of the sin offering, removed the sins from the sanctuary, he placed them upon the scapegoat. When Christ, by virtue of His
own blood, removes the sins of His people from the heavenly sanctuary at the close of His ministration, He will place them upon Satan, who,
in the execution of the judgment, must bear the final penalty. The scapegoat was sent away into a land not inhabited, never to come again
into the congregation of Israel. So will Satan be forever banished from the presence of God and His people, and he will be blotted from
existence in the final destruction of sin and sinners. {GC 422.2}
10. What event is connected to Jesus blotting out sins? Acts 3:19______________________________________________________________
11. What are the “times of refreshing”, when does it take place, for that is the official time when the blotting out of sins take place?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“I was pointed down to the time when the third angel's message was closing. The power of God had rested upon His people; they
had accomplished their work and were prepared for the trying hour before them. They had received the latter rain, or refreshing from the
presence of the Lord, and the living testimony had been revived. The last great warning had sounded everywhere, and it had stirred up and
enraged the inhabitants of the earth who would not receive the message. {EW 279.1}
Note: The “times of refreshing” represent the outpouring of the latter rain. The “times of refreshing” or the latter rain, officially falls at the mark of
the beast crisis that the third angel’s message brings to view. See Revelation 14:9.
12. When the sins of God’s people are blotted out once they make their decision at the mark of the beast crisis, the third angel’s message, what
does Jesus apply upon the saints?____________________________________________________________________________________
“I was pointed down to the time when the third angel's message was closing. The power of God had rested upon His people; they
had accomplished their work and were prepared for the trying hour before them. They had received the latter rain, or refreshing from the
presence of the Lord, and the living testimony had been revived. The last great warning had sounded everywhere, and it had stirred up and
enraged the inhabitants of the earth who would not receive the message. {EW 279.1}
I saw angels hurrying to and fro in heaven. An angel with a writer's inkhorn by his side returned from the earth and reported to Jesus that his
work was done, and the saints were numbered and sealed.” {EW 279.2}
13. What must be our experience before the Mark of the Beast is enforced so that our sins can be blotted out? Acts 3:19
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“I saw that many were neglecting the preparation so needful and were looking to the time of ‘refreshing’ and the ‘latter rain’ to fit them
to stand in the day of the Lord and to live in His sight. Oh, how many I saw in the time of trouble without a shelter! They had neglected the
needful preparation; therefore they could not receive the refreshing that all must have to fit them to live in the sight of a holy God. Those who
refuse to be hewed by the prophets and fail to purify their souls in obeying the whole truth, and who are willing to believe that their condition is
far better than it really is, will come up to the time of the falling of the plagues, and then see that they needed to be hewed and squared for the
building. But there will be no time then to do it and no Mediator to plead their cause before the Father. Before this time the awfully solemn
declaration has gone forth, ‘He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be
righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.’ I saw that none could share the ‘refreshing’ unless they obtain the victory over every
besetment, over pride, selfishness, love of the world, and over every wrong word and action. We should, therefore, be drawing nearer and
nearer to the Lord and be earnestly seeking that preparation necessary to enable us to stand in the battle in the day of the Lord. Let all
remember that God is holy and that none but holy beings can ever dwell in His presence.” {EW 71.2}
14. Note: We must repent and be converted when the times of refreshing shall come. In other words, we must repent and be converted before
the enforcing of the Mark of Beast; because the refreshing or the latter rain officially falls at the Mark of the Beast crisis.
15. Note: Consider the phrase, “The Times of Refreshing” Acts 3:19. The word “times” is plural. Why is the word “times” plural. Answer: There
are two seasons of refreshing, the early rain and the latter rain. See James 5:7; Hosea 6:3; Joel 2:23.
16. What is the difference between the former rain and the latter rain?___________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
"’Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain.’ ‘He will cause to
come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain.’ In the East the former rain falls at the sowing time. It is necessary in order that
the seed may germinate. Under the influence of the fertilizing showers, the tender shoot springs up. The latter rain, falling near the
close of the season, ripens the grain and prepares it for the sickle. The Lord employs these operations of nature to represent the work of
the Holy Spirit. As the dew and the rain are given first to cause the seed to germinate, and then to ripen the harvest, so the Holy Spirit is
given to carry forward, from one stage to another, the process of spiritual growth. The ripening of the grain represents the completion of the
work of God's grace in the soul. By the power of the Holy Spirit the moral image of God is to be perfected in the character. We are to be wholly
transformed into the likeness of Christ.” {TM 506.1}
The latter rain, ripening earth's harvest, represents the spiritual grace that prepares the church for the coming of the Son of man. But
unless the former rain has fallen, there will be no life; the green blade will not spring up. Unless the early showers have done their work,
the latter rain can bring no seed to perfection. {TM 506.2}
17. Again, we must repent and be converted when the times of refreshing shall come. Bear in mind that all throughout Scripture the word
“times” deal with days, weeks, months, years, and dates.
18. Above every other day of the week, which day is called “the day of refreshing”? Exodus 23:12; Exodus 31:17_______________________
19. Note: Every day, especially every Sabbath, we must make sure that we have repented of every known sin and that we are living a converted
life. If we die in this condition, our sins will be blotted out at the appointed time. If we are alive when the Mark of the Beast is enforced, we will
make the right decision and our sins will be blotted out.
20a. Note: We must repent and be converted when the times of refreshing shall come so that our sins we will blotted out. As we sincerely
confess our sins, who will give us repentance, which is the desire to forsake sin? Acts 5:30,31; Romans 2:4____________________________
20b. As we sincerely confess our sins, who will give us both the desire and the power to remain converted? Philippians 2:13_______________
22a. What did the Lord say to Moses regarding the commission of sin? Exodus 32:33_____________________________________________
22b. What were the sins that ancient Israel committed that caused the Lord to say that He would blot them out of His book, if they refused to
sincerely confess and surrender? Exodus 32:1-31__________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
22c. Should we expect to be saved, if we hold onto similar sins? Exodus 32:1-33_________________________________________________
23a. Compare Psalm 109:3-8 with Acts 1:16-20. You will discover that those words specifically apply to Judas Iscariot and to anyone that
follows his steps.
23b. What did the Lord say regarding Judas Iscariot, and to anyone who follow his way of life? Psalm 109:12-15_________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
24. Let us consider the fact that Judas Iscariot was a disciple of Jesus, yet he refused to confess and surrender his sins, when Jesus gave him
the opportunities to do so. Judas Iscariot’s name will be blotted out of the book of life. Meditate upon the life of Judas Iscariot and ask God for
strength to confess and forsake every known sin.
25. What does Jesus promise to do for His people? Psalm 103:12; Jeremiah 50:20; Micah 7:19______________________________________
26. What must be our experience to receive the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise to us? Revelation 3:5___________________________________
