Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born French graphic novelist, illustrator, and film director. She was born in Rasht, Iran and raised in Tehran by a politically active family. She attended French schools in Tehran and Austria before moving to France to study arts. Satrapi is best known for her autobiographical graphic novels Persepolis and Persepolis 2, which detail her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and her young adult years in Europe. The films adaptations of Persepolis that she directed have received critical acclaim. Satrapi uses her work to promote cross-cultural understanding and speak out against war.

Achievements, Recognition, Awards
• In 2001, Marjane Satrapi won the Angoulême Coup de Coeur Award, a major prize
for comics authors, for her graphic novel ‘Persepolis’.

• In 2002, Marjane Satrapi won another award given during the annual
Angoulême Comics Festival in France, the Angoulême Prize for
Scenario, for Persepolis: Tome 2’

• In 2008, the ‘Persepolis’ was recognized in the


Cinema for Peace Award as the ‘Most Valuable
Movie of the Year’.
