Walt Disney

SPEECH
S1 – Introduction
’’It’s kind of fun to do the impossible’’ said once the creator of Mickey Mouse. Hello
everyone! My name is Bușu Mihai Cătălin and today I am going to talk about the life of the
animated man: Walt Disney.

S2 – Table of contents
The topic of this paper is Walt Disney – the man who gave a new perspective on cartoons.
My project covers the following (present the ToC slide).
S3 – Argument
I have chosen this topic because Walt Disney is one of my role models in life. Through his
work, I was able to see what one can do by simply using their imagination and following their
passions. And that’s what life is all about: doing what you love.
S4 – Early life
Walt Disney was born on December 5th, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1917 he entered
McKinley High School, where he studied arts in depth.
His progress was interrupted by World War I, in which he participated as an ambulance
driver for the American Red Cross. In 1919, when the war was over, he went to Kansas City to work
as a commercial illustrator.
By 1922 he had set up his own shop as a partner with Ub Iwerks.

S5 Early career: 1920–1928

In 1923, Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks went to Hollywood. There, they created the ,,Alice
Comedies’’ series, which was distributed by Margaret Winkler and Charles Mintz.
In 1925, Disney hired an ink artist, Lillian Bounds, whom he got married to a few months
later.
In 1927, Walt created a new animated character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which enjoyed a
great success. One thing Walt did not know was that Mintz was the owner of intellectual property
rights to this character. When he found, he decided to leave. Ub Iwerks followed him.
S6 Creation of Mickey Mouse to the first Academy Awards: 1928–1933
To replace Oswald, Disney and Iwerks developed Mickey Mouse. Disney's original choice of
name was Mortimer Mouse, but Lillian thought it too pompous, and suggested Mickey instead,
saying it sounds more ’’commercial’’. Mickey Mouse first appeared in May 1928 in Plane Crazy, and
later than in The Gallopin’ Gaucho, but both of them were a failure. The third cartoon was the lucky

one: with synchronized sound, Steamboat Willie was the cartoon that made Mickey Mouse so
famous.

S7 Golden age of animation: 1934–1941

In 1934, Walt started working on another idea: a cartoon that ran the length of a film.
Everyone in Hollywood was calling it "Disney's Folly". 3 years later, in 1937 ’’Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs’’ was released and it was a tremendous success, winning critical raves, the adoration
of the public, and 8 Oscars for Walt. In the years that came, more unforgettable Disney movies
were born: Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941).
S8 – Theme parks and television: 1950–1966
In 1955, he opened a theme park in southern California: Disneyland. It was a place where
both children and their parents could take rides and meet the familiar animated characters. Walt
also became one of the first film producers to venture into television, with The Mickey Mouse Club
(1955), and Mary Poppins (1964).

S9 Illness and death

In 1966, Walt Disney developed lung cancer brought on by his lifelong smoking habit. He
died in hospital on December 15th, 1966, at the age of 65.

S10 – Conclusion
In my opinion, Walt Disney is a truly inspiring man. While doing research for this paper I
have learned quite a few things. One of those things is do what you love and take it seriously,
because that’s the only way to succed. Another thing i have learned from him is not to let obstacles
stop you. Just because you encounter some difficulties on your way to succeding, you have to be
perseverent and to remember why you set your goal in the first place. Today, the name Walt Disney
is synonymous to creativity and imagination.
S11 – Bibliography
This is the sitography page, with the sources I used in order to realize my paper.
