Discussion Pendulum Lab Dynamic

This document summarizes an experiment to determine the moment of inertia of a wooden pendulum using oscillation measurements. The experiment measured the moment of inertia at two points (A and B) on the pendulum, both at the center of gravity and at the suspension point. The experimental results were compared to theoretical calculations and showed percentage errors of up to 19.47%. Sources of error in the experiment were identified as issues with launching the pendulum consistently and unstable swinging due to loose components. Precautions for more accurate results included ensuring the pendulum could swing freely without friction and taking multiple measurements to average.

DISCUSSION
In experiment of wooden pendulum, we have an objective which is to determined moment of
inertia of the wooden pendulum by oscillation. This objective had been divided into 2
categories. The first one is at the centre of gravity while the other one is moment of inertia at
suspension point. Then we divided wooden pendulum into 2 point that act as the axis for the
pendulum to oscillate.
We started with point A. From the experimental result, moment of inertia at point A for the
centre of gravity is 0.031 kg m³. This result is differ from the theoretical result from the
equation that been stated in the result section. The theoretical result is 0.0335 kg m³ which
cause 7.46 % of percentage error. The second category for moment of inertia which is at the
suspension point by experimental result is 0.105 kg m³. This result also differ from the
theoretical result. From the calculation, we obtained 0.1252 that resulting quite big percentage
error which is 16.13%.
Then we go for the second point at point B. For the centre of gravity, from experimental result
we obtained 0.0298 kg m³. Same case as point A the result also slightly differ from the
theoretical result. Theoretical result give us 0.033 kg m³. This gab causing 9.70 % of the
percentage error. For the second category, moment of inertia at the suspension from experiment
is 0.1063 kg m³. As for the theoretical result, the calculation give us 0.132 kg m³ that cause us
19.47% of percentage error.
Even though the experimental and theoretical result give us quite big gap, we still can consider
the results are still valid. These percentage error cause from the error that occur during the
experiment. The first error is blunder error, the synchronisation of the one who launch the
pendulum and the person that start the stop watch is slightly different. This cause the result is
not accurate. The other blunder error is when we want to launch the pendulum at the point B
as the axis. We cannot ensure that the angle is precise because of the hole on the pendulum.
Then systematic error, the lock at the pendulum at point A is lost from its position that cause
the swing is unstable. This also affected the result of the experiment. We have to avoid these
kind of error to make our result more accurate and decrease the percentage error.
For the precaution method, we have to ensure that when we want to launch the pendulum,
pendulum have gap from the boarder. This is because the friction that presence between the
pendulum and boarder will cost the time for pendulum to oscillate. The second on is try to be
more precise when launching the pendulum to ensure that the angle. This is because different
angle resulting different reading. That's why take 3 reading and take the average of the reading
for the calculation to make our result more accurate.
CONCLUSION

After finishing this experiment, we could obtain the moment of inertia for those 2 category
which are centre of gravity and at suspension point. From the result we could realized that for
both point A and point B the moment of inertia for centre of gravity is lower than moment of
inertia at suspension point. This is because the moment of inertia at suspension point is the sum
of moment of inertia at the centre of gravity and product of mass and ý. Therefore moment of
inertia at suspension point will be bigger.
For comparison from point A and point B, we could conclude that point B have bigger moment
of inertia compare to point A. This is because point B have smaller hole compared to point A
that cause the ý is bigger so that will produce bigger moment of inertia. This means the smaller
hole had been drilled will produce higher moment of inertia.
To obtain more accurate result we must minimise the error that been stated in the discussion
section above. We also have to follow the precaution method to avoid other error occur. These
precaution method will helped to make result more accurate.
