Major Exam # 1

This document contains a 3 question major exam for a mass transfer course at King Abdulaziz University's Faculty of Engineering Chemical and Materials Engineering Department. The questions involve calculating methane concentration using given diffusivities and partial pressures at different distances, predicting diffusion coefficients for electrolytes like KCl at different temperatures, and using the Wilke-Chang equation to predict the diffusion coefficient of acetone in water at two temperatures.

Question #1

At 298 K and 1 atm total pressure, methane (A) is diffusing at steady state through
nondiffusing argon (B) and helium (C). At z1 = 0, the partial pressures in atm are PA1
0.4,PB1 = 0.4,and PC1 0.2,and at z2 0.005m, PA1 01,PB2 = 0.6, and PC2 = 0.3. The binary
diffusivities from Table 6.2-1 are DAB = 2.02 × 10-5 m2/s, DAC =6.75 x 10-5- m2/s, and
DBC = 7.29 x 10-5 m2/s. Calculate NA.

Question # 2

Predict the diffusion coefficients of dilute electrolytes for the following cases:
(a) For KC1 at 25°C, predict D°AB
(b) Predict the value for KCl at 18.5°C. The experimental value is 1.7 × 10-5
cm2/s.

3
Question # 3

Predict the diffusion coefficient of acetone (CH3COCH3) in water at 25° and

50°C using the Wilke -Chang equation. The experimental value is 1.28 10-9
m2/s at 25°C (298 K).
