SUBJECT: ENGLISH TOPIC : Nouns


Noun:-

A noun is name of a person, place, animal or thing.

e.g:

person : teacher, girl, Tom

place : park, street, Dubai,…

animal : dog, cat,…

thing : box, ….

There are two main types of nouns - proper nouns and common nouns

Proper Nouns:-

Proper nouns are names given to a particular person, place, animal and things. They
always begin with a capital letter.

a) names of person’s:- Shyam, Rani


b) days of the week/months- Sunday,…/ May,….
c) names of special days:- Independence Day,…
d) countries – India, Pakistan,…

Common Nouns :-

Words for people, things, animals and places are called common nouns.

a) words for people:- eg- teacher, doctor, girl, boy,….


b) words for animals :- eg- dog, bear, lion……
c) words for places :- eg- school, bank, shop……
d) words for things:- eg- pen, box, printer……

Countable nouns:-

Countable nouns are names for things that you can count.

Eg:- table, computer ….etc

Uncountable nouns:-

Uncountable nouns are names for things that you cannot count.

Eg:- sugar, water, rice,….etc

Countable nouns can be singular or plural.

e.g. My dog is playing.

My dogs are playing.

We use a few and many with countable nouns.

e.g. I have a few pencils.

I have many books.

We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular. We use a singular verb.

e.g. The water is cold.

Singular Nouns:-

A singular noun names one person, place, animal or thing.

eg:- a chair , a dog……etc

Plural Nouns:-

A plural noun names more than one person, place, animal or thing.

Eg:- desks, books, chairs….etc

Some nouns do not follow the above rules when forming the plurals. In
some cases when the plural is formed the whole word changes. Also some
nouns are always in the singular.
