Introduction to Indian marriage

The Indian’s marriage concept has gone through various changes from the ancient
times until now, but the meaning of marriage remains same. In Indian culture, marriage
means tying the knots of the bride and the groom for lifetime.

Though with modernizations, arranged marriages are still the norm in India. It is usually
the parents and family who find their children a suitable life partner. There are various
reasons for this tradition, but mainly it is all about the continuation of the Indian culture
where the sexes cannot mingle so much and no dating culture.

Love Marriages Vs Arranged Marriages

Though what is referred to as “love marriages” in India, the Indians are actually take a
dim view and as a less ideal way to find a spouse. Love marriages can be defined as
marriages that come about as a result of a man and woman falling in love. Instead of
love marriages, arranged marriages are the most common way to find a spouse in India.

In India, the responsibility to arrange a marriage falls on the bride’s father. He must
choose the prospective groom for his daughter and makes the approach to the
prospective groom’s father and discuss about the marriage the possibility. Arranging a
marriage for his daughter perhaps the most daunting task an Indian father faces. A
great deal of shame results for a father if he has not managed to arrange a marriage for
his daughter at a particular age. What is considered to be the optimal age for marriage
varies by caste and also by education level and location. For instance, marriages
generally take place in the teenage years among India’s lower caste people and at older
ages, after college, for the India’s higher caste.

Although many Indian parents choose a spouse based on what they feel is the best for
their children, there may also a possibility for a marriage decisions that is based on the
size of dowry or other ways as for the family might take it as benefit from the arranged
marriage.

Astrology in Marriages

Once the prospective bride and groom’s fathers agreed for a match, Hindu families
have another step before finalizing the marriage arrangements, they have to make sure
that the spouse-to-be’s horoscopes match.

The Hindu bride and groom must provide their horoscopes to a Hindu priest that is
known as a pundit, to determine if their horoscopes match. The pundit will analyze what
is known as “janat patri” in the horoscope to determine how many match. If there is an
insufficient number for janat patri match, the marriage cannot be preceded. The
arrangement will start to scratch.

How Spouses are Found in India

In India, a large number of family and friends may be involved in the process of finding a
spouse. Indians are the excellent networkers. Once the search for a spouse is in
process, the news will spread throughout their relatives and the area of where they are
living. The potential spouses will come out to make an approach to that particular
house. These connections may come about through school connections, business
connections and family connections.

Classified advertisements in the newspapers also play a part in finding a spouse in


India. There is so called no disgrace attached in finding spouse through newspaper
advertisements because matrimonial classified advertisements in India are focused on a
lifetime commitment instead of temporary relationship. Matrimonial classified
advertisements in India are divided into categories that are based on religion and caste.
It may include of other attributes of the bride or groom based on character, education,
profession, and looks.

Barbers often involved in the matchmaking process in India. In India, barbers know a
large number of people and are also exposed to gossips and people’s mouth. The
potential bride’s father may ask a barber for the information on a prospective groom’s
family before approaching the prospective groom’s father.

Although times are changing in India and many Indians are starting to adopt western
culture, it is likely still a long time to go before love marriages become the norm in India.
