Synonyms of Mikulicz Syndrome

Mikulicz Syndrome is characterized by swelling of the salivary glands in the mouth (salivary glands) and extreme dryness in the mouth (xerostomia). Biopsy of the swollen glands is important for diagnosis. Symptoms may come and go or persist for long periods. Treatment involves the corticosteroid prednisolone. A study using fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) to diagnose swollen lymph nodes found tuberculous lymphadenitis was most common, followed by non-specific lymphadenitis. Other potential diagnoses included malignant tumors, cysts, benign tumors, and sialadenitis.

ABSTRACT
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) (Submandibular sialadenectomy)

Tuberculous Lymphadenitis was the commonest diagnosis (36%) followed by reactive/non-specific

lymphadenitis (18%). Other pathologies were malignant neoplasms (14%), cysts (10%), benign neoplasms
(8%) and sialadenitis (6%). FNAC was inconclusive in 8% of cases. Carcinomas metastatic to lymph nodes
were the most common type of malignancy followed by lymphoma and thyroid gland carcinoma (Papillary
Carcinoma).
