Aniline Point Test Apparatus: Instruction Manual FOR
Aniline Point Test Apparatus: Instruction Manual FOR
FOR
THEORY:
The Aniline point of an oil is the lowest temperature at which the oil is
completely miscible with an equal volume of aniline.
ANILINE:
Normally pure n-heptanes may be used as aniline.
APPARATUS:
The following parts are supplied with instruments.
1. Stand for clamping elect. Stirrer motor
2. Heater unit with electric control system.
3. Glass bath (jar)
4. Clamp for Holding U tube
5. Glass U tube
6. Lighting system
Assembly of instruments:
• First fix up lighting system in vertical rod.
• Fix up clamp for holding U tube
• Then fix up elect FHP motor stirrer on Rod
• Set up Heater unit and glass water bath in its position.
• Fix up U tube properly in clamp.
PROCEDURE:
➢ Clean and dry the app thoroughly. Pipette 5ml. of the dried sample
and 5 ml of Aniline into the test tube: if the sample is too viscous to
pipette, weigh into the test tube to the nearest 0.01g an amount
corresponding to 5ml at room temperature. Assemble the cork,
stirrer and thermometer so that the bottom of the thermometer
bulb is 5mm from the bottom of the test tube and central with
respect to the ring of the stirrer. Support the test tube
concentrically in the jacket so that it is approximately 20mm above
the bottom of the jacket. Stir the mixture rapidly but avoid
splashing and the inclusion of air bubbles as much as possible.
➢ If the aniline and the sample are not miscible at room temperature,
heat them in the heating bath with stirring, until complete
miscibility is obtained. Remove the app. From the bath and allow
the solution to cool, with stirring, at a rate not exceeding 1°C/min.,
Note as the approximate aniline point, the temperature at which
the mixture becomes cloudy as to obscure the thermometer bulb
by reflected light.
➢ If the aniline and the sample are miscible at room temp. cool the
solution in the cooling bath, with stirring, until it becomes opaque.
Remove the app. From the bath and allow the mixture to warm at a
arte not exceeding 1°C/Min. stirring constantly until the
thermometer bulb can be seen by reflected light. Note this temp.
as the approx. aniline pt.
➢ Repeat the determination using fresh quantities of aniline and
sample in clean, dry app., and continue alternately heating and
cooling the mixture until a constant value for aniline pt. is
obtained, taking care to avoid over-cooling or overheating.
REPORTING:
Report the constant value obtained as the Aniline PT.IP 2 Method A
PRECISION
Results of duplicate tests should not differ by more than the
following Amounts:
0.2° C 0.5° C
