Sixth Grade Mathematics, 2018-2019

A Note from the Teacher: Welcome to a new year! I am very excited to work with you this year
and hope that it’s a successful one for us all. This is my nineteenth year teaching for Center Line
Public Schools and my eighteenth at Wolfe Middle School. I am a product of Center Line Public
Schools, attending Crothers Elementary School, Wolfe Middle School, and Center Line High School. I
earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education from Oakland University, certifying
me to teach mathematics and science at the middle school level. I also received a Master’s Degree in
Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University.

Course Description: Sixth grade mathematics is designed to prepare students for success in middle
school math with instruction in Ratio and Proportional Relationships, The Number System,
Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability, based on the Common Core
State Standards for Mathematics (http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/6/introduction/).

Seating: There will be assigned seating for this class. Students are expected to always sit in their
assigned seat, unless instructed to sit somewhere else. Seating assignments will change periodically
throughout the year.

Grading: Student work is categorized in the following manner:

50% Summative Assessments (may be retaken during my office hours, see below)
40% Class Work (may have to be completed at home when a student is absent)
10% Practice (homework)

The grading scale is as follows:


100 – 93 A 76 – 73 C
92 – 90 A- 72 – 70 C-
89 – 87 B+ 69 – 67 D+
86 – 83 B 66 – 63 D
82 – 80 B- 62 – 60 D-
79 – 77 C+ 59 – 0 F

A 50% score is to be used for missing assignments.

Semester Grades and Exam: There will be a final exam at the end of each semester. The exam
will cover the material taught throughout the semester. The two quarter grades and the semester
final exam will determine the semester grade for each student. The quarter grades are worth 45%
each and the semester final exam is worth 10%.

FALL – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10th and THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11th
WINTER – THURSDAY, MARCH 7th
Materials: Students must have their assignment, notebook, folder, pencil, and agenda with them
each day. A textbook might also be used, but is not needed on a daily basis. Necessary math
materials (such as rulers and protractors) will be provided in class but cannot be taken home.
Therefore, students should have similar materials at home to do assignments. A scientific calculator
will be needed at times throughout the school year.

Tardiness: It is the student’s responsibility to be inside the classroom prior to the bell ringing. If a
student is not inside the classroom with all materials, then he/she will be marked tardy.

Absences and Make-up Work: Good attendance is vital to being successful in this class. Since
discussions, explanation, and oral review cannot be made up, a great deal is missed if
attendance is poor. The weekly agenda will be written in the back of the classroom and daily
objective will be posted in the front of the classroom. Each student is held accountable for
getting any absent work (class work, practice), and returning it within two class periods for
every day absent. Also, students are responsible to make arrangements to make up any
missed summative assessments. Weekly assignments are written in the classroom agenda
book. Students are responsible for obtaining any handouts given from the absent work bin.

Citizenship: Citizenship grades are determined by how a student conducts him/herself in class.
Outstanding citizenship means that a student is always cooperative, courteous, punctual, attentive,
and involved in class discussion.

Classroom Rules:
RESPECT yourself.
RESPECT your peers.
RESPECT your teacher.
RESPECT the classroom.

Contacting the Teacher/Office Hours: Parents/guardians are encouraged to be involved in their


student’s progress. Feel free to e-mail and/or call me at any time. My e-mail address is
herrellj@clps.org. The Wolfe phone number is (586) 510-2300. I will do my best to get back with you
as soon as possible. My office hours are most Mondays and Thursdays after school until about 3:30.
Students and parents are encouraged to check power school regularly.

Progress Sheets: Every student will receive at least one progress sheet during each quarter.
Please sign the progress sheets and send them back with your student. Phone calls, e-mail, or notes
home will be used to notify parents or guardians if other communication is necessary.

Remind/Weebly: In addition to the classroom procedures, there is a handout so parents can sign
up for Remind. Remind is used so I can communicate with parents/guardians about upcoming tests
or quizzes, progress sheets, and other classroom/school happenings. Also, check out my Weebly
page at http://mrherrellwolfe.weebly.com/. It is a work in progress and more will be added.
