BRITISH STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR
GALVANIZED COATINGS ON WIRE
FOREWORD
This edition of BS 443 is generally very similar to the previous edition, but the
emphasis is now on the metric dimensions and methods of measurement, In the
revision the opportunity has been taken to adjust some of the relationships
between weight of coating and wire size to take account of ISO R.345, ‘ Ship-
building details. ‘Tests on galvanized stec! wire for ropes’. @
‘The standard specifies a continuous zinc coating of good quality intended
for a wide variety of wire applications in which medium/long term protection
of the steel against corrosion is desired. It must be emphasized that the protec-
tion afforded by the zinc is sacrificial and the duration of the protection is
therefore dependent upon the conditions in which the galvanized wire will be
expected to function. Therefore, while the requirements of this standard have
been proved over many years of experience they are not intended to prejudice
purchasers against negotiating more severe requirements with manufactirers
to meet special conditions. Such amendments would apply only to the coating
requirements and not to the methods of testing,
‘The dip test is not an indirect measurement of the weight of coat. It is
intended only to reveal a serious ecceatricity of coat leading to failure over a
portion of the cicummference, even though the total weight of coat may be in
accordance with the standard.
‘No requirement in this standard can be regarded as an alternative to any
other requirement herein included. To comply with this standard, a wire must
fulfil all the requirements laid down and not only any one or any two of them,
It should not be assumed that every wire size is commercially available
galvanized in accordance with this standard in any tensile range without res-
{riction, Reference should be made to the appropriate British Standard for the e
wite in question.Ge

SPECIFICATION
1. SCOPE
This British Standard applies to galvanized wire of ciccular section in diameters
from 0-23 mim to 10 mm inclusive and lays down standards for
(1) Weight of zine coating,
(2) Uniformity of zine coating.
) Adhesion of zine coating.
(4) The methods of testing for these properties
The standard makes no reference to the quality of the wire itself. It does not
«pply to articles made from wire which have been galvanized after fabrication
2. QUALITY OF COATING
2.1 General, Metallic zinc used in the preparation of the coating bath shall
have a purity of not less than grade Zn 3 of BS 3436*,
‘The coating shall be continuous and reasonably smooth. 1t is recognized that
the heavy coatings pecified in this standard may exhibit some surface irregu-
lavities.
2.2 Number and selection of test pieces. The degree of sampling shall be that
specified in the standard for the particular type of wire or product fabricated
from galvanized wire (e.g. rope), In the absence of such a standard the degree of
sampling shall be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser.
In removing the test pieces from the coil or fabricated product case should
be taken to avoid surface damage. Portions which are obviously damaged shatf
not be used.
2.3. Weight of coating, When determined in accordance with one of the methods
given in Clause 3, the weight of coating shaif not be less than that given in Table 1
for the appropriate wire.
Diets, ince nas bean taken from x fabricated product hen the minizoam
‘weight of coating shall be reduced by 5%.
2.4 Uniformity of coating. When tested in standard copper sulphate solution by
the procedure given in 3.4, the wire surface shall not show any bright adherent
copper deposit after the specified number of dips shown in Table I.
Af the test piece has been taken from @ fabricated product then the specified
dips shall be reduced by one half-minute dip.
