Smart Duct Sizer V 3.0

This document provides instructions for using the Smart Duct Sizer V3.0 software. It explains how to open and enable the software, reset default settings, select between SI or Imperial units, arrange the CAD and duct sizing windows, choose between head loss or velocity sizing methods, enter sample duct sizing data in a branching system, start a new duct run, and total the airflows to size the main duct.

SMART DUCT SIZER V 3.

0 DATE: 21/09/2018

1) Open the excel sheet “Smart Duct Sizer V3.0”

2) If you see below message, click the “Enable Editing” button.

3) Enable Macros.
4) Click reset button. This will resize the window. It will also reset units and default values.

If you want to change from SI units to Imperial units (& vice versa), click the “⇅ UNITS”
button.

5) We recommend arranging the CAD and Duct Sizer Windows on your computer
monitor as shown below. This will enable you to seamlessly switch from one
application to the other.
6) Select the required duct sizing method. When you select head loss (method), the
duct sizes are calculated using specified head loss values. The specified velocities
have no effect on the calculation of duct sizes. You can notice in the below image
that velocity values are greyed out. However you can still use the velocity values to
define maximum velocity limits. When calculated duct velocity for a given duct size
exceeds defined limit, it will be highlighted in orange colour.

7) When you select velocity (method), the duct sizes are calculated using specified
airflow velocities. The specified head loss values have no bearing on the calculation
of duct sizes. You can notice in the below image that head loss values are greyed
out.
Note: Recommended max. duct aspect ratio is 1:4
SAMPLE DRAWING TO ILLUSTRATE DUCT SIZER DATA ENTRY
Before you start data entry, decide the duct sizing method you want to use and the
design parameters for your ducts. For this example we have chosen equal friction
method and a head loss of 0.05 in.WC/100ft.

Start data entry from the farthest branch or diffuser. Enter airflow for duct ① in cell
A9, which is 80 CFM. Enter duct width (150mm) in cell B9. The program will
calculate required minimum duct height (125mm). The Airflow in the main duct ②
will be automatically updated.

Enter airflow for duct ③ in cell A10. Since it is same as the previously entered
value, you can hit the Ⓡ button (or press F1 key) instead of typing the numbers.
The main duct ④ total airflow will be updated automatically. Enter width for the
branch duct and if required a new width for the main duct.
Repeat the process for ducts ⑤ and ⑥.

Ducts ⑦ to ⑫ will be sized as a separate duct run and then this airflow added to
duct ⑥ to get the total airflow in duct ⑬.

To start a new duct run, type “NR” in cell A12. The previous entries will be greyed
out and total airflow will become zero.
Repeat the duct sizing procedure for ducts ⑦ to ⑫. Your program window should
look like below.
Finally to get the total airflow from both the duct runs and size main duct ⑬ , delete
the New Run (NR) separator from the Airflow column A12.
