SPC-1024 – M/W 11AM Informative

Eating Disorders

I. Introduction

A. Every 62 minutes at least 1 person dies due to an eating disorder.

B. I performed extensive research and gained insight on several types of eating disorders

which allows me to share this knowledge today with you.

C. I’m going to inform you on (1) what eating disorders are, (2) the physical damages

they create and, (3) the emotional toll of suffering from this illness.

II. Body

A. This is what an eating disorder is.

1. An eating disorder is a serious mental illness which causes sufferers to have

extreme concerns about the food they consume and their body image.

2. The most common type of eating disorder is anorexia nervosa, though other

common types include bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

B. Obviously, eating disorders physically damage the body.

1. Eating disorders depletes the vitamin and minerals in the body which weaken the

heart and put sufferers at an increased risk of cardiac arrest.

2. Eating disorders also cause some sufferers to eat massively below their basic

metabolic rate which in turn causes the body to break down stored fat, but also muscles including

the heart to use for energy.

C. However, eating disorders also result in psychological damage due to the emotional

tolls they create.

1. Those suffering from eating disorders often obsess about the concept of food and

calories to the point of avoiding daily activities such as eating in front of others and withdrawing

from social situations.

2. Eating disorders also often act as a pathway for other mental issues such as anxiety,

depression and body image disorder.

III. Conclusion

A. Ultimately, this is (1) what eating disorders are, (2) the physical damages they create

and, (3) the emotional toll of suffering from this illness.

B. By informing the public on what eating disorders are and how they affect people,

general awareness can be tied with early intervention to help reduce the rate of 1

person dying every 62 minutes due to an eating disorder.
