Early Filipinos' religious beliefs were described differently by Spanish chroniclers. Fray Juan de Plasencia noted there were no temples for sacrifices or idol worship. Antonio de Morga observed there were no temples either and people had their own household idols without fixed rites. Miguel de Loarca described the Pintados' tattoos could symbolize bravery, and their religion differed from Chirino who said Filipinos worshipped animals, unlike Plasencia who said they worshipped the moon and stars.
